I could be wrong but i never thought Lee liked Sakura because of rivalry.
He simply thinks she's cute that's all. The rivalry could have fired it up more but im sure rivalry isnt the one that started it.
its like love at first sight sorta thing that fits Rock Lee's personality of seeing Sakura as his ideal girl. if i remember correctly, he asked her out the moment he saw her without knowing her relation with both Naruto and Sasuke.
I could say the same thing with the BS of Naruto liking Sakura out of rivalry. Naruto is just a boy who happened to be attracted with this cute girl in class and was also drawn with her persistence to be acknowledge. Over time he is continously amazed by her great qualities like that chakra tree training, her having super strenght, her healing Kankuro when nobody in Suna can, or even her just being herself trying to be strong.. actually Naruto just love everything about Sakura, the good and the bad. But no.. he just have to end up being a jerk and only likes her out of rivalry..that he was just badly constipated everytime Sakura hugs or cry over Sasuke. But was never really hurt about the fact Sakura likes Sasuke.
Nope he just thought its gonna make him lose to Sasuke if he cannot bring him back to Sakura that actually leaves him with less chances of getting THE GIRL. He made up a promise because as he said...he KNOWS full well how much Sakura is feeling hurt. He KNOWS how painfull it is because HE FEEL THE SAME WAY TOO. Well what do we know. He just feel like saying something cool to make his rivalry standing higher.
Ugh this series just reeks of stupidity.
I've never heard of anyone falling in love with someone because they hated someone else. It just...defies the laws of logic. Of human psychology. Love born out of rivalry? Seriously?? It's impossible unless you were a really twisted person with a backwards sense of self-worth. And that's exactly what they reduced Naruto to in order to explain his love for Sakura. They made him a shallow idiot who couldn't tell the difference between love for a human being and love for a cup of noodles.
