There are quite a few reasons why I don't read much fanfiction, and haven't for the last couple of years. One of the most prominent is that when I find one I really really enjoy, it inevitably mucks up my sleep schedule as I dedicate too much time to reading rather than sleeping.

In a combination of "last night" and "this morning", I stared at my computer screen from about midnight to 10:30am reading "Pet Project". At that time, I finally took a break to sleep--all the way until 5pm this evening. Two hours or so later, and I've gotten all caught up.

And the damn thing's not even complete. The author swears she will never abandon it, but I worry about her habit of taking hiatus for months--and once, a year--between updates.

Aaaaugh, this fic. I actually first read it back in 2005; or at least, the first chapters of it, as that's all that had been written at that point. I'd followed it's updates for a couple years, until it seemed like that author had just....stopped. No updates, no notes explaining anything.

I was severely disappointed, but eventually let it go and forgot the fic even existed. After looking through deviantArt for SS/HG fanart, though, I was surprised to see that there was quite a bit of art dedicated to the fanfic. Every piece had me vaguely recalling just how much I'd enjoyed reading it, until I finally decided to go back and find it; it helped that a few of the pieces of fanart had been for chapters I'd never read. Apparently, the author had come back during the time I'd forgotten about her work.

Rereading it now...was interesting, to say the least. The last time I'd read it, I'd been in high school. Less mature, less able to appreciate everything in the story beyond the romance--and even then, less able to really appreciate everything that the romance was or entailed. Reading it now, as a (slightly) more mature person, and as someone most definitely more inclined to appreciate a romance for all it's worth, I was reminded of why--for all the trouble they seem to cause me--I read fanfiction from time to time.

But I was also reminded of two other reasons why I don't read it as frequently as when I was in high school. One, I leave unfinished fics with the feeling that I'm somehow now in the palm of the author's hand. And the reason for that ties into reason-why-I-don't-fanfic-much number two: I tend to get far too emotionally invested in some fanfiction. To the point where I'll spend days afterward in a sort of daze, wandering around recalling scenes and moments from whatever story's got my attention.

I also tend to wax more poetic and wistful, though I'm sure that might be evidenced a bit here. /smirk

I could probably go on and on if I let myself. But I won't; I've ruined my sleep schedule enough that I've got a constant dull headache, and I've been so dedicated to getting caught up with the fic that I haven't eaten in the last 24 hours. Time to roust myself and pretend I'm not still dying to just sit and reflect on what I've been reading, haha.

And that, kiddies, is why I avoid certain indulgent things: I know my tendency toward obsession, and my stubborn dedication to things I enjoy. I know my habits of shutting down everything else in favor of said enjoyable things. And I know how bad that can be.

I also know that it's never bad to slip myself some prose-laced drugs, though, too. And above all other things, I know I think way too damn much and in turn talk too damn much if someone gives me the room to.

The house is mine and my brother's for the next five days, 'cause the parents went on a cruise with some friends. Booooyaaaaah. This means louder music at later hours and food in my room, baby.

You're lucky, my parents rarely leave the house, and it's always a shame they don't go anywhere. They really need to to allow myself, and my siblings to have some alone time.

With my parents, it's a mixed bag. If someone in the family's involved with a show, then it's guaranteed the house will be near empty. If not, then they're home (when not at work, naturally).

How many siblings do you have?

This is sure nice Kushina, what also remembers me that it's getting about time for me to move on and find a new place to live, kind of tired of living with my parents, I just need enough money and the right oportunity. What about you Kushina, any intentions to move out after finishing your studies?

I have two other sibling that live in my house, my sister who is the loud mouth, and my brother who is handicap, so he can't cause any trouble, but we're mostly adults in the house, so we don't have to worry about it being out of order most of the time that is.

@alex-- As comfortable as I am with my room ('cause I'm the kind of person to get settled in a place and stay there), I'm definitely looking forward to having the freedom that comes with living on my own.

@Toasty-- Sounds kinda nice, having all-adult siblings. I just have the one brother, who's 14, though he's decently mature for being as young as he is. Despite having seven years between us, we've always been really close~

My brother is 29 while my sister is 26, so there's a bit of an age different between us, but not much.

@Toasty-- Ah, you're the baby of the family? Pfff, in a few years I'll be in my mid-twenties, and my brother will still be a teenager. It'll be weird lol

@Dragunov-- That sucks, dude D= My parents originally intended to ship me off to my grandma's after graduation so I could go to junior college where she lived, but... Circumstances changed and that didn't happen.

I'm the youngest of the family, but sometimes I feel like the oldest since I tend to be more mature than my sister. xD

Aaaah, one of those situations XD I have a couple friends that are the same way. My brother and I split it in a weird way. Most of the time I'm the more mature between us, and other times, he's the one being most reasonable/responsible.

I can kinda relate; my brother was very much like that when he was younger, so I always ended up acting like a second mom nagging at him lol
These last couples months, though, he's become a lot more level-headed and easy-going. Makes it much easier to just be a sister and hang out with him~
