Yeah, I feel like it is, be ready for the fourth wall breaking, anime parody, bunch of gags episode though it does give character development, everyone gets developed and backstory! The serious arcs are really good and everyone is very likable!!Haven't watched it or read it but was always curious about it. It is good enough to recommend this series to a casual guy like me and what should I be looking forward to in this if I choose to watch it?

I normally wouldn't suggest Gintama as a gateway to anime or manga b/c it's so unusual and could be easily mistaken as a gag manga/anime solely. It's superslowpaced, so in the beginning it's the characters and comedy that will need to grip you. The comedy can be hit or miss although almost everyone who watches it loves it. Gintama is a dirty and cursing anime. Anime is highly recommended b/c it consistently breaks the fourth wall and has superb voice acting.
There are 273 episodes or so. The "seriuos" arcs as I like to call them are usually very short, spawning three to six episodes. Many episodes will feel like fillers, but be aware! You shouldn't skip episodes b/c many of them will introduce characters that will become returning ones.
Gintama might be a gag anime, but it's much more than that. It indeed has a plot and becomes slowly but surely more exciting. I heard the manga is very good right now.
