I agree. The fact he's standing alone on this movie shows that he may of been annoyed that Pierott wasn't handling things the way he wanted them to be handled.
i dont think this was the reason for him to take the lead i think the real reason is the others movies was too cliche,
take blood prison , they get a girl with a dark past(movie 5), a villain that take power from others person's (movie 6), everyone going to help ( movie 6,5),the protagonist got heavily injured or dies (movie 5,6).
i think kishi take the lead cuz he wanted to make something different and not cliche
the history the monsters everything feels like they were recicled
we have seen this kind of histories a lot of times.
