How would you market the change? Easy. Don't mention pairings at all, just change it without mentioning them. Show how the change was a natural progression and not because you were coerced into doing it.
Compare the DmC reboot to the Devil May Cry 5 reveal
Interviewer: "Why the change to the story?"
Me: "We are taking Naruto back to his roots: His meaning. His themes. His trials. His accomplisments. Naruto was the story about a boy who was a reject and shunned, but through the power of will and hardwork he achieves his dreams and overcomes any hardships. Naruto would grow into a man of understanding even if he does not agree with you and your methods. We want Naruto to go back to a time when he stood up to bullies, aimed to prove everyone wrong, and achieve something greater than even he could ever imagine. While others were so busy focusing on what they and the fans wanted him to be...we are going to focus on what Naruto himself wanted to be and what he wanted out of it. Isn't that what being a shonen hero is all about? We want people to read Naruto and say to themselves that if Naruto can do it and overcome it all then so can they. That they shouldn't just give up and settle for whatever outcome that is handed to them. Some fans won't like the changes we make, but I feel they can learn to understand and even appreciate why we made such changes. All these characters are special and amazing and they all have a soul of their own. Why throw such a beautiful thing away because you want to play favorites? Is this going to be perfect? No, nothing can ever be perfect, but that is the beauty part of it. Sometimes perfect does not mean flawless and that is exactly what Naruto is about."
Interveiwer: "So what of the rumors that the pairings might change?"
Me: "You're just going to have to read the story to find out. I will say this, whatever happens it would will be a result of a natural progression of events. Nothing will happen without a reason to it."
Interviewer: "Are you worried this will alienate some of the fanbase?"
Me: "There is always going to be that fear that you will be hated for your work, but I believe that even if people don't agree with your decisions they will at least respect you if you show why such things occur."
Though with what many of us are proposing, many would view it as the opposite, taking the original Naruto (say DMC 4) and turning it into something else (DmC)
For the record, I DO like the DmC reboot, but it definitely is a far departure from the roots of the original. NT would have been better off not making such radical changes (design, origins, etc) but Capcom wanted them to stay away from their canon as much as possible. I personally think they wanted to see what NT would do to the gameplay and see if they could take some elements from it, while the story would turn off enough of the hardcore fans that when they came back to their original series they could easily win them back.
I would say just market Team 7. Show them all being badass and give a reason for everyone to cheer them on. Good animation, familiar yet tweaked character designs, possibly something new if you can show it, and things they never saw before but would have made sense to include in Naruto. Whatever "controversial" romance happens, keep it off of any advertising material. Just tell people to come for the fights. Even if the youtube community loses it's collective kitten over it, there will be enough people to actually support the series and consider it a success.
