I could be wrong, but I think it's that they're trying to convince themselves that this isn't kitten and are trying to force it upon other people.
They can't cope with the idea that this might actually be kitten
Best way to recommend Naruto to someone:
If you don't care about the romance, themes, or morals to the series and you're looking for an action series then you'll definitely enjoy it.
Also if you like the goofy protagonist who likes someone and you like you get a shy girl that likes him but he doesn't love her back but eventually they become a couple, then it's the manga for you.
Also if you like main female characters that love the bad boy characters, and despite being abused by him, she continues to love him for the rest of her life, then it's the manga for you.
I really hate bringing out the truth, but that's probably one of the few ways to recommend Naruto to anyone nowadays. A great story with great characters (excluding Hinata even though she could've become one) gets ripped out of them by the ending.
