I spent some of the last few days going through the manga and there is absolutely no way, unless Kishi just makes a huge, huge mistake, that NS isn't going to happen. Hinata is a side-character and Sakura and Naruto and the possible romance between them has been teased and teased and teased. Not to mention the several Kushina parallels. They have the funniest, deepest, and best relationship and Sakura finally realizing that Naruto, the real man who, like Minato with Kushina's insecurity (her red hair), likes her insecurity (Sakura's forehead), and has been at her side selflessly pursuing the redemption of a friend. Too many moments, too much interaction, too much romantic notions between them, too great of a relationship to throw it away for a likable side-character. No way.
That said, I had a hilarious thought. It would be the biggest troll move that Kishi could pull. From some translations from the new extender trailer for "The Last", it refers to the movie as showing whats happens in the "gap" or "blank" period. Leading myself and others to believe that we will get a final epilogue that is even after the events of "The Last" in the actual manga format and Kishi won't leave it to a movie to answer so many questions.
But for hilarity's sake, what if, with all this NH marketing they are doing, the movie is exactly that. In the movie we see Naruto slowly fall in love with Hinata and forsake the years of selfless love and development for Sakura and fall for Hinata. And at the end of the movie, we see Hinata being woken up from the IT. The movie, describing the "blank" period, doesn't refer to any actual timeline but the dream Hinata concocted in her own mind while sleeping in IT. The reason the red scarf rips (the red string of fate), as we see in the trailer, is because subconsciously she knows that it isn't what is truly destined for either of them. She subconsciously invents a villain after Hyuuga's and has him kidnap her little sister, which is the only way that the village would allow her to embark on such a high rank dangerous mission with the elite (Naruto, Lee, Shikamaru and Sakura). In this dream, Sakura is compliant and supportive of Hinata's feelings for Naruto, and even helps her pick out the scarf for him, subconsciously indicating that Hinata would need Sakura out of the way but at the same time that the only one who could pick out the scarf for naruto, as it symbolizes the red thread of fate, is Sakura, who she knows is Naruto's real fate.
Completely mad but made me laugh.
