I hate bad Japanese in general, but one that's been popping up a lot lately (I've seen it in a couple of fics recently) is Naruto referring to Sasuke as "The teme." This may come as a shock to some, but teme does not mean "bastard", or "jerk", or "a**hole", or "meanie poo-poo-head" or anything like that. It's not even a noun. It means "you". As in the second person singular pronoun. I know, I know, the subtitles say all that other stuff, but that's because teme is a particularly rude way of saying "you" for which there is no English equivalent. The subbers' most important job is to accurately translate the message, not the literal meaning of the words.


Whenever I read "the teme" I cringe. It just looks ridiculous.

I always heard teme ment "you bastard" but Your explaintion is probably the correct one. Like how dattabayo and shannaro have no english meaning.

What I find really annoying is that so many people hate Kakashi but love Jiraiya just because of their teaching styles. Anyone notice that they say very simular teaching styles? Show Naruto once or twice then go do their own thing.

I have to agree with the above. I cant stand it when people don't bother checking for mistakes. it also annoying when people write entire stories like this. its not that hard to hit shift and put in some capital letters.

I also hate stories where Naruto has some long lost brother or sister etc.

I recently saw a mixture of all my hates in one fic. The summary said something along the lines of 'a relatif of naruto's mom takes Naruto away from konoha after 12 years Naruto returns to konoha'.

I hate it when writers take a character and write a story about their OC just using that characters name. What ticks me off almost even more 'an that though is when people take their favorite character and deify them up above all the other characters so that they can't possibly lose. 'Cause then theres just no story.

I have read quite a few fics that do this, actually. I cringe as well, but I'm slowly getting used to it. After all, about 75% of Fanfiction writers don't check Japanese terms before using it. So, it either ends up calling Naruto 'the dobe' or 'the dope' (that one I don't get) and Sasuke 'the teme'. Teme simply as, Illjwamh says, it's a very crude way of saying YOU. Same with using the word Kisama. Both are very rude terms of Japanese saying YOU. So it just annoys me sometimes when I hear.. OMG SASUKE, YOU TEME! D<. It kinda ruins the story effect.

Yeah. I could say the same thing for you in this post. XD. My fanfiction peeves are somewhere in this thread... but I'll add another one. There are always people that put: 'I suck at summeries.' (exact spelling) or the most retarded titles and summaries I've ever read. Now, if you're gonna write a story, please have common sense and put in a proper title or get someone to beta your summary for you. PLEASE.

I hate stories that greatly change how a character acts, and the only thing that's the same is their name.

haha I'd like to say I hate the stories that say in the summary "Sorry if this sucks" or "My writing is terrible" but I really can't because I take their word for it! haha. Screw reading a story that the author doesn't even have confidence for!


Eh, I really just hate the fics that have no backbone to it. I mean really, it's like people are too lazy to type the background or the details. C'mon!

Fics that use way too many curse words.... To create great fanfictions i don't think that every other word should be F this or F that!!! I'm not too fond of AU, either, but there have been some that were actually good so I cant say they are all bad. I am just trying to say that if the author is writing for that series he or she should at least write in the world those particular characters are from per say.

I read the beginning of a fic where Naruto was smoking at the age of twelve and had a very foul mouth. Another one had him wearing sunglasses, can you imagine Naruto of all people in sunglasses? Yeah... some of these authors are very lucky breathing is an involuntary reflex.

I'll agree with the script writing, I don't think its dumb... but it sure is creepy.

1) Mary-Sues
No words can express my hatred for these horribly unrealistic characters. Who wants to read about an impossibly beautiful, well-endowed, athletic, intelligent and otherwise perfect character? Pretty much no one, I think. Personally, I like to be able to relate to a character through their struggles to overcome one of their flaws. With Mary-Sues, that's pretty much impossible.

2) Bad spelling, grammar etc.
Sure, not everyone can have perfect spelling, grammar and punctuation, but that's no excuse to not put in the effort to proof-read your own work. Even when you don't want to proof-read, at least get someone else to do it for you. Is it really too much to ask for someone to help you make your fiction at least readable?

3) Too much description on what a character is wearing.
It's nice to know what a character is wearing, but a full-out description is just tedious and usually totally unecessary. We don't need to know what exactly your character is wearing and how they are wearing it.

Just some pet peeves of mine when it comes to fanfiction.
