Hinata was first, yes, but that doesn't mean she'll win the race so to speak. Especially not at this rate.

Hinata used to support Naruto as the loser who doesn't let his failures keep him down. She got to feel pity for him, as he was the only member of their class to be below her (in her mind). She is most vocal (in support) when she thinks he is about to lose, is usually surprised when he manages to win, and stays away from him when he is celebrating his victory. Think about the Pein fight. She only stepped in when she thought he had lost, and she was not trying to rescue him. Her (in her own words, selfish) purpose was to show that she could fight a losing (suicidal) battle in support of someone important to her. (I think that after her confession, she is probably in a healthier state of mind and has more self-confidence.)
That's why I like Sakura better. Even when she thought she hated Naruto, she enjoyed when he did pranks, or something clever in combat, or when he showed his strength. When she yells at Naruto to keep fighting, it is because she expects him to win, despite the odds. At the same time, she does not want him to suffer to achieve his goals. (She tried to stop Naruto when she saw what going 4-tails was doing to him.)
Think back to the hospital scene in chapter 236, when Sakura was outside Naruto's door. At the time, it seemed pretty obvious that she was broken up because Sasuke wasn't coming back. But now, I wonder... She went looking for Naruto first, not Sasuke. Her hesitation could have been due to Naruto's pain, not her own loss. She had seen Naruto beaten, but rarely seen him fail. She came to celebrate with Naruto in his triumph, and now had to console him. She then tried to reassure him the same way that he had done so many times for her (but she thought was sarcastic taunting in the past): she put on a big grin and cracked jokes instead of showing her sorrow. And when she saw that his spirit was back, she did *not* say "you'll get him next time" or "I'll take care of it while you are in the hospital". She said, we'll do it *together*.

And,
She also thought of Naruto first when she was fighting with Sasori and caught in the poison fog. He was her determination to get out, because she remembered "her promise."

Not necessarily, it does not really matter who was first to acknowledge and admire and all of that stuff. Its pretty much who the person was that wants and tries to actually help you, spend time with, and love, sometimes in a non-intimate way. I mean, you know, despite Hinata acknowledging Naruto first, what did she do to help him, in a feelings manner?
I mean let's face it, how many people here, who are in current relationships, had the actual person hate you at first, but after spending a good amount of time together, that they see who you were as a person, and grown to like you very much?

Well, I haven't had people feel that way about me before, but I've felt that way about other people. I used to hate a few people I used to know, but now I really care about them.

Too bad, if it is real, then it's probably filler.

I love it when NH fans try to point this out XD I personally find it a weakness of the pairing that Hinata is supposedly able to understand Naruto so well from the start (and I do give them that she did, in some ways), yet she did nothing to help him. They say she watched him so closely that she knew the real Naruto, the boy underneath all the pranks. I say, then why didn't she help him? If Hinata really did know him, she would have known how desperately lonely he was. She would have gotten past her shyness and tried to talk to him, since she 'knew' how he felt. Hinata had a head start on Sakura to be someone really special to Naruto. She didn't use her golden opportunity and I think that is what cost her any close relationship with him.

I love this argument too because its blatantly untrue. The first person to acknowledge Naruto was the Third Hokage, and the first one to openly acknowledge him was Iruka in the very first chapter.

I'd like to add to that if you don't mind and this will STING NH fans but must be said none the less. *Ahem* SHE NEVER, I REPEAT, NEVER VOICED HER ENCOURAGEMENT DIRECTLY TO NARUTO IN PART ONE NOR SHOWED ANY PHYSICAL SUPPORT. SO IT'S WORTH ZIP. NIL. NADA. If she Had, like Sakura did and Narto noticed and appreciated it, well there is your foundation and argument. But NO such luck.

It is from a episode where Naruto is talking about how he could make Sakura fall in love with him after he got stronger by mastering the first original rasangan.. ohhh how we love the old Naruto.

Yep, I understand the text. With the whole surpassing the next generation, Naruto must do the things that Jiriaya himself could not do before he died. Manage to be with the girl he loves and bring peace to the world. And yep, it would be nice if the things above were to happen. It just seems right, before the inevitable battle between Naruto and Sasuke happens.
Can't wait to see how this turns out. Kishi has yet to disappoint me in a chapter and I'll be damned if he do it for the first time by blowing the narusaku moment before the battle with Sasuke.
