If you'll indulge me here, I'll explain what gives me pause about that statement- that I see Sakura as underplaying things, not just complaining about normal parenting. It sounds very typical, but... We never hear Sakura complaining to anyone else about her parents, not until this version of Sakura in the movie, where she rants about them to Naruto (who doesn't understand at all due to not being raised by his parents... ) Sakura only tells two people who she feels enough trust in- neither boy understands though... I put that piece together with what we saw of Sakura personality prior and even sometime after her friendship with Ino. Sakura is even more crushed psychologically than Hinata was, she's also very fearful of adults that have authority over her, even at the start of part 1. Any criticism by those that she puts her trust in basically puts her into an emotional tailspin. It's too bad Kishimoto couldn't figure out a place to introduce Sakura's parents in part 1 like he did the majority of the kids. I think if fans in the west would have seen Mebuki verbally laying into part 1 Sakura it would have heightened sympathy for her. (she's always been far more popular in Japan than in the west, but that probably would have made her even more liked in Japan, out of sympathy).
Sakura complains but she's actually naively envious of Naruto being, as she would see it, free to be himself. Look at how minimal her "rebellion" is in the genjutsu world- she pigs out on beher favorite food and doesn't clean up the mess. No real acting out or even pranks from what we've heard.
This also explains Sakura's overpowering wish for approval from those she cares about and how negative things they say to her still cuts her like a knife inside and makes her tear into herself.... It all goes back to her parents not believing in and supporting her...
We may still agree to disagree on this point but I just feel like Mebuki was meant to be similar to Hinata's father in how she views her child. Where Hinata's father changed after the Chunnin exams, Mebuki still doesn't believe in or support Sakura, and Kizashi won't challenge Mebuki because he's too passive. I think they need a bit of Naruto's "talk-no-jutsu"
I see Sakura's minimal rebellion to be so minimal because of the fact that is because all her parents were about, simple things like chores and eating habits.
I agree with Malverstation, in that I see Sakura as the most normal teenager, parents wise, of all the Konoha 11. Again, I dont know so please correct me if I'm wrong, but her parents are not ninjas right? They're normal citizens so they probably treat Sakura like a normal daughter, and the fact is she isn't a normal teenager. I dont think that it has anything to do with them not believing or supporting her. They may not just understand, and they probably definitely dont want their daughter going on S-Rank missions ha. Like my mom for example, when I told her I was doing tennis in college, she was super excited for me.. until I told her I had to leave 3 weeks early and wont be home for 2 months. Then she changed her tune to "Are you really sure? What if you're not good enough?" Hahaha granted, not the same as being a ninja, but somewhat similar.
And you're right, we both could be right! It could be a mixture of both. We dont know.. which is SUPER annoying. Darn you Kishi! Haha!

Translation of what Junko (Naruto's seiyuu) said starting from the 8th minute.
"It is."
(Takeuchi-san says that if she talks, she will get some people angry... but the interviewer keeps egging her on, saying "Yet you still want to tell it all, don't you?")
"...well, it's because this is something that was said by Kishimoto-sensei. This time, Kishimoto-sensei ended up creating both the story and the characters for the movie himself... so it was really amazing. Though. To. Tell. You. The. Truth. While this movie was about Naruto and his growth, a movie where Naruto could grow up... Kishimoto-sensei's first suggestion was 'How about we make the story about Sasuke?'"
"Eh!? That is really interesting!"
"Everyone, please don't spread this around! Anyway - as expected, not making Naruto appear in a movie about the manga 'NARUTO' seemed a little, well... so, as expected, it ended up being a story that showed Naruto's growth, by returning once again to Naruto's starting point. Only, as expected..."
"Oooh? What is it, what is it?"
"Well, because of that, he couldn't write the story about Sasuke - but somewhere inside his heart, with Naruto being shown like that... and considering that there are also many points that he wasn't able to draw in Sasuke's story, what with him being the other pillar and all... well, he certainly talked as if he wanted to make an announcement, right there in front of everyone."
"Eeeeeeh! That is really interesting!"
"Isn't it! So perhaps, if this movie is popular and well-received by everyone, Kishimoto might take into his hands next year's movie too... and then he might write Sasuke's story... and maybe even Kakashi's story while he's at it! Things like those, you know?"
"I see!"

Heh, this actually intrigues me. What fascinates me about this is the possibility of Sasuke starring in a movie, with Kishi in charge. This gives my mind many ideas of what could have been with Sasuke in the lead (as he was hardly in any of the movies), even though I'm not particularly fond of his character. I'm also interesting of what kind of stories that Kishi can still tell with that character, stories he couldn't tell in the manga, or didn't have enough time. It also seems from this interview, that Kishi may already have whole story planned with Sasuke as the lead, which is why she didn't originally want to tell, because it could still be made into a movie. In fact, maybe something IMPORTANT about Sasuke's character would have revealed. The possibilities, and the reasons for it may still exist, are truly endless at the moment, until such a thing can truly be confirmed by others.
I kind of actually find it funny, that his first idea about the movie was to Sasuke star in it, only for it to come out almost the complete opposite. He wasn't even in it, AU Sasuke doesn't count, and that alternate Sasuke was hardly in the movie.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
NOT SASUKE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ciardha
I think we have just agree to disagree because sakura has nothing to prove to her parents she got strong and reason is "help" naruto, she's mostly arrogant and disrespectfull towards her parents, and is in a constant fighting.
while there are some parts that i agree her parents are protective mostly because they wanted her to have a normal life and dangerous missions.
the same thing that mina/kushi does in the movie.
@Junk Takeuchi ""...well, it's because this is something that was said by Kishimoto-sensei. Sorry but it wasnt only about this, and this grow wich a dont call "grow' because he just get what was lacking for him a little of parental love, the movies aws mostly focused on naruto and sakura and his parents it can be naruto and sakura relationship and parental love, but this theme for me must be 3rd place because naruto was already convinced about his objectives he was missing some love and caring.

But Junko is right about something, it would be weird to see a Naruto movie where Naruto didn't even make an appearance.
