Warmest decade ever:

http://news.yahoo.co...e_s_end_climate

Now I'm not really complaining because I'm a warm weather girl, and absolutely despise the cold...but this warming up still spells all kinds of bad news for the near future.

And in the same day...

I had to go to work at 3 am today with inches of snow on the road. I love the snow, don't get me wrong, it just sucked when everyone else decided to take the day off from work and I was left to handle the department by myself. I miss Snow Days when I was still in skool. dry.gif

The Earth gone mad...it was snowing in Texas recently...it seems like the cold places are getting warmer, and the warmer places are getting colder...this isn't global warming...this could be a shift in the Earth's axis...buutt what do i know...as far as i can see, everything relating to climate has been hijacked by the E. movement.

LOL global warming is lies, it's minus f#$%ing 30 degrees Celsius here. I think its about par for this time of the year.

PLUS, global warming has hit the earth since the last ice age. BLOLOLOLOL this will be my only post on the subject, cause I just like making fun of people who are freaking out about kitten.

Exactly, it changes the weather patterns of different areas. Texas gets snow every 3-4 years, but this time we got it twice in one year. This is why people are freaking out down here. One time last year, it snowed pretty well, and then it snowed here three days ago. Set a record for snow fall here in texas too.

I am someone who wants to look after mother earth, and all her glory. I don't mind that I would have to pay a little extra for it to happen. Its very likely that we are causing it, but they don't know that for sure YET. I do think we sped up the process.

I don't agree that we should have to pay extra. We should cut back on what is excess, and that would mean reducing costs as well as reducing waste. Certainly, Americans and humans all over the world have had some impact on the globe, but just as certainly the planet has trends of cooling and warming that we couldn't change even if we tried everything in our power.

Nuclear power produces huge amounts of electricity and its cheap. Some scientists in Germany are working on Nuclear fusion, which is basically uniting 2 particles and creating...yes creating an artificial sun.

Here...also i remember that Einstein said that if his theory is negated by nature, then the whole theory would have to be abandoned...if we continue using Fossil Fuels and the Earth turns to another Venus...then the climate change theory is true...but if we stop using fossil fuels, and millions worldwide starve to death, especially in third world nations that depend on their oil and natural gas resources, and the planet continues to get warmer...then expect a lot of riots, and a lot of madness.

Yes but most of it has to do with nuclear waste for example in france they dump it in the ocean.

We could have solar power, and wind power. They our cheep and easy to make as well. Texas is number 1 in wind power....

Neither of these are viable alternatives at this point nor are they close to being so.

Both are extemely expensive, unreliable, and inefficient forms of energy that, especially in the case of wind, eat up massive amounts of land and come with their own sets of hazards. People near wind turbines often complain of the noise pollution and there is the issue of birds flying into the turbines. Land used for wind turbines can't be used for something else, which isn't a big deal in a place like west Texas, but may be a huge deal in other places.

It terms of cost per Kilowatt hour generated it's not even comparable to things like oil and coal. Wind and Solar are a lot more expensive than coal and oil. Their is a reason they are not widely used and its not just because of conspiracies by the "evil" oil companies. If they were a genuine profit to be made here, you don't think they'd want in on it? Instead these sources and frauds like ethanol have to be subsidized and they still aren't cost effective or even close to being so.

One of the great ironies is that many of those who support Climate change often chastise people like me as not caring about the poor, yet, those same people tell poor African nations that for the sake of the planet they must use wind and solar and can't use their plentiful oil and coal and, thus, in effect demand those countries sit on their resources and remain in poverty.

I suppose I might revisit the Climate Change issue when those guys at East Anglian can explain why I should trust anything they say at this point.

Cheep? Cheap.

No, not cheap at all. Its expensive to make, and transport to an area. After a wind turbine has been set up, that piece of land really isn't used for anything else. Besides, they're loud, and they have to always be maintained (unless you want a piece of wind turbine blade in your house)

Solar Power? Have you any idea how expensive solar panels are? You can use them to power up a small house, but to buy a lot for a power plant? Not to mention... what happens during winter or rainy days where there isn't any sun? How would people get power? Storing power is fine, but auxiliary power runs out after a while.

As a purely technical note, it isn't necessary to dump Nuclear waste. Nuclear waste is actually very recyclable; the only reason it isn't is that treaties (and Presidential Executive Orders, in the US, dating back to Jimmy Carter) forbid it, as it is a process also used in the refining of weapon-grade nuclear material.

(an important point to note if you're writing science fiction, and need to consider things such as how to calculate the length of time a space vehicle can travel with a certain amount of nuclear fuel stored aboard. I'll also note than many 4th generation nuclear reactor designs (currently in the 'functioning experiment and awaiting deployment in real life situations' stage) have reduced fears of meltdowns and waste management problems down a great deal, and in some cases have even reduced by far the amount of radiation shielding required to be safe -- another factor to consider when writing science fiction where you need to calculate the size of a vehicle)

I would also like to note that solar power panels are functionally incapable of providing the necessary power to operate a manned spacecraft for a single human being unless the solar panels are massively large in proportion to the rest of the spacecraft; keep in mind a device providing about as much energy as a car battery was enough to keep three people alive in the 1970s during the Apollo 13 incident. Solar power is not entirely a waste of time, but to expect it to become anything greater than a supplemental power supply at any point in the near future is REAL Science Fiction.

Greenpeace is sorta corrupted...or somewhat sick...they were the same people that convinced African nations to try and block the Green Revolution, as well as Dr. Borlaug from visiting their nations...even if it meant starving Africans to death.

@Strangelove, I seriously doubt windpower is the most efficient, If all the windy states across the U.S. was filled with Wind turbines it would still only supply 12-15% of the total electricity consumed. Coal/Gas power plants are still the most efficient from what I learned in my electrical courses in my maintenance degree. The U.S. power grid is way over due for a complete overhaul with more efficient control/switch panels, transformers, transistors, and other electrical equipment. (Internet by powerline is supposed to be best future high speed internet)

Hydropower is the most feasible as a future replacement, but in reality it will take solar, wind, hydro, and other renewable resources to secure our future economy. I've even seen a Air powered cars being used as Taxi's in India with an advance air compressor and generator.

I was being sarcastic...<3 did you saw the video i posted?

When it comes to Hydropower you will have to rely on the force of the current. When it comes to Solar power you will have to rely on sunshine, and when it comes to wind you will have to rely on the force of the wind.

I'm talking about extracting hydrogen from water with new developed power plants. It shouldn't require natural current, motors powering pumps are used to create flow.

You're still talking about a cost the governments wouldn't pay.

Extracting hydrogen is expensive, as it is with fusion power plants. Which is what they're doing, extracting hydrogen from water and powering it.

I forgot where I read it, but the energy required to splice the atoms is greater than what the hydrogen can produce.

My bad. Fusion power plants extract lithium and tritium from sea water. Both are still isotopes of hydrogen though.
