It's because it's not necessarily the norm. Sakura's very pretty, but in a more... average way, I suppose? She's not the perfect faced, bombshell bodied goddess you might tend to see in a Japanese anime; hell, as far as figure goes she's pretty average. It's also a matter of her not being set in the sort of mold a lot of folks like, as your Hinata's might be, figure-wise.

Sometimes, it doesn't even have anything to do with that and just comes down to some people desperately needing a reason to hate her or justify their hate, so they'll go for whatever.

^^ Yep, I agree, I just don't see how people, and when I say people I mean youtube commenters, say like she has a man face or she's got small jugs. That's ridiculous, she looks fine, he looks fine, they both love the way the other looks and the personalities clashes well. Its like its meant to be, yet our opposition does not see it like that, though they may have really good valid reasons for it.

I have a strong suspicion based on what I've seen in other fandoms- both east and west that this is the truth of the matter- going back at least to the late 1960's when the nastier segment of rabid Beatles fans would claim as a "valid" reason for hating Yoko Ono was because they though she was unattractive. (Actually she's quite attractive, but in a very classic Japanese way, in her 30's and early 40's she had a beauty with her face and hair like a woman of the Heian court in modern dress- like here:

(And yes, for the curious- Yoko is naturally a D cup- unusual for a full-blooded Japanese woman, as is her very wavy hair- the longer she had it the wavier it got.)

You'll notice some facial characteristics similarities with Sakura's face and Yoko's because that is a very classic Japanese beauty ideal- especially the high broad forehead, large expressive eyes (more modern ideal there- 1930's onward), small but high bridged nose, and the face shape framed by the hair.

It does seem to be irrational fan hate. Sakura is one of only two female characters that have been actually stated in the manga to be physically attractive by a multitude of characters (Tsunade is the other one).

So this is a matter of people completely ignoring manga canon ; it's one thing to personally find Sakura unattractive, but to state that as if its some sort of fact is what really annoys me.

I fully agree with Ciardha, that Sakura is based off of Japanese ideals for beautiful women.

But she's a real life person we can't compare anime characters and real life people anyways Sakura IS pretty. as stated above People just want to hate her for no good reason and make the pettiest excuses on why BECAUSE in actuality they have no reason to hate her (at least not anymore) They just want to fan a pointless flame it's the same as Hinata worshipers Hinata hasn't been seen actually doing anything and yet they prattle on about how she's PERFECT and what not. Okay I'll be fair Hinata is not UNATTRACTIVE honestly, but her eyes are kind of a turn off, just saying. And besides lets face it, she's no different than Sakura was for Sasuke in part I. NOW If anyone NH fan counters with that fairy tale/fantasy romance thing where they fall instantly in love I'd say BUT in those cases the feelings are actually RETURNED!!! If they say he's taking his time to have Naruto realize his feelings I'd Say Then Why was it SAKURA who hugged Naruto in Chapter 450 and spent time with him!? Its' Been 12 years and over 500 chapters! OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! AND if they Use that Stupid Superman thing With Clark Lana and Lois I'll scream "DOESN'T WORK!!!!" Naruto is NOT over Sakura and it's not like SHE'S a plague on his physical health! What else you've got!? FILLER moments? HAH! If those NS filler moments don't count than neither do NH filler moments, NEGATED!!!!! anything else!? HER CONFESSION!? no response doesn't count! and if they said neither does Sakura's beause she's lying, I 'll counter "even IF that was true, Sakura's interactions with Naruto, hints of her feelings, and romance development's ECLIPSES Hinata's!" and so on

I'm not quite sure what the topic of conversation here is anymore, but I thought I'd throw something in about Sakura and Hinata's physical attractiveness.

From what I can tell, 'attractive' characters in manga/anime (I suppose it applies to western comics and cartoons too) are usually portrayed as being physically attractive to either the reader or the other fictional characters. A lot of times it's both, where a 'moe' girl will seem to have a small harem of fanboys, but I don't know if Sakura or Hinata fit that bill exactly. When I see Hinata, I sort of get the impression that she's being drawn to attract male readers, at least to some extent. She has long hair, big eyes (maybe not big, but they draw attention), and large breasts, all of which I generally seem to see on those types of characters.

I'm personally not averse to characters drawn that way ( ), but like people here have said, Sakura is one of the only girls in the manga who have been complimented for her looks, so I think it's safe to say she's more attractive than Hinata, at least by the standards of the manga. As far as my own opinion on her attractiveness, I guess it's hard to say, but I generally prefer more outgoing, expressive girls in manga/anime than the shy, static ones. Plus, I'm a bit of a sucker for odd hair colors.

Boy howdy, makes you think that you came to the right place, and not stumble into somewhere else that might make things a bit awkward, and yeah I, too, prefer more outgoing girls than shy ones, because I'm a person that kinda likes characters to have some sort of edgyness, uniqueness, and has a backbone.
