It's kind of funny how Naruto is both considered popular and unpopular all at the same time.
Just think about this?
"I believe his new series will take off"
Response: "It's no Naruto."
"I hope this series will have a good ending and make everything"
Response: "Hey, it's no Naruto."
Naruto is like in this perpetual state of being in limbo. We don't know if it is good or bad. It is good for a good portion, but then it went bad because of the ending. So is Naruto still good or bad?
It is going down in history as one of the worst plots in manga now...I guess it has become infamous like Twilight and Tommy Wiseau
Well for me Naruto is actually below the standard of Twilight because again Twilight's conclusion and couple were "logical" with how the story builds up the characters, the writing etc. Naruto on the other hand was just half-arsing it's themes, and I really think some were just thrown in just to sound "deep and philosophical". Plus, in the end they were not achieved or got shafted because of the new gen project and, as you say, Hinata Hyuga, the shy, mild mannered, "beeewbs with legs" princess had to get her way. Hell I think that Naruto (by Chpater 700 and "The Last") is WORSE than any Japanese battle-harem light novel series (YES even the anime adaptations of those light novels) that give no thought to the setting, fight scenes, plot points, adventures, and locigal consistency other than how to show how love struck and turned on the haremettes are for the MC and how the MC is op and is the best at what the series is about, because at least that is the intention and theme, whereas Naruto both subverted and betrayed its intentions and themes last minute. Why did Naruto betray its themes? Because SP were fantasizing about rolling in the moola of Naruto's international fan-base that they IMAGINE are majority NaruHina fans and are financially supporting the franchise. On the flip side of things, Kishimoto literally gave up on trying to defend his story's intentions and didn't care about the series' integrity anymore.
Plus I bring up Naruto's popularity not as a measuring stick for the new sci-fi manga, but to point out how it may potentially get AXED because Naruto has the worst, illogical, contradictory ending in all of known literature and story telling in general. It was like a fairy tale meant to portray some sort of message to it's readers only to be at the last second "psyche!!!! That was not the meaning of the story at all!!!! The true meaning of the story is the "false pretense" of TWUE WUV!!!!!" So Naruto is actually WORSE than a fairy tale. So I am bringing up the fact that it was popular because it had the ultimate "fall from grace" in any story telling conclusion that I, you, or anyone else here can think of can think of. Add that all together and do you think that it is plausible for Kishi's new manga to last a few weeks, much less months? Maybe it is just wishful thinking from me because I had not only had my expectations betrayed but also am told utter bullkitten from all authorities of the franchise that I've been reading it wrong, but I DON'T imagine Kishi's negative rep at the moment will have many willing to give his series a thought, much less a chance. And again this stems from the fact that Naruto WAS popular, but then nose dived through the earth and burned at the earth's core
