^ Gundam did something similar recently with Iron Blooded Orphans. Funny enough it aired right next to Arc-V.
All throughout the show the protagonists, Tekkadan, are shown in a fairly positive light. They're a bunch of child soldiers who staged a coup against their employers, and during the first season they became seen as heroes for their actions but (once you rewatch the series after seeing the end) it starts appearing less happy. Tekkadan becomes an unhealthy environment for it's members, kids who believe in sacrificing themselves for the good of the group, killing anyone who stands in their way, and following their leader without question. The MC's development even has him believing his own dreams and ambitions are a distraction from serving the boss and is fully willing to slaughter anyone who stands in his way. We go into the second season where the narrative continues to overtly put them in a positive light and are making the right calls, the implications point to them not being the heroes people think they are. In the end, they lose, most of the characters are killed, and they're seen as the bad guys by the public.
And this ended up enraging a bunch of viewers, who in my experience tended to ignore the implications. It's kinda telling that once Tekkadan's actions led to them suffering consequences people began saying the writing became terrible. From what I've heard, the director has even said that he'd like to make a movie for the series if the fans forgive him.
