Relief washed over him in waves, and just like that, everything was right in this world. It amazed him the effect she had on him. She smiled. It was such a beautiful smile, but there was sadness in it. He could tell. It wasn't a full smile, god damn he wanted to see it so badly. She shouldn't ever be sad, it was wrong, it was damn near a crime for her to be sad. But it was his fault. It was always his fault. He looked in those eyes of hers, if there was anything that compared to her smile, it was her eyes. They stole his soul each and every time he saw them. Those pools of soft violet caught him, and the storm raging inside him withered away.

She had come quickly, hearing the door slam close. It was probably one of those idiot customers that didn't know proper respect. Well, she'd damn sure teach them. She'd teach them well, they wouldn't ever be that disrespectful in her coffee shop. Well, her and Yomo's coffee shop. But he was borderline useless most of the time. Some of the time. Whatever, it was her shop, even though it was theirs. She rounded the corner of the hallway that lead to back room and stopped at the edge of the counter.

It was him.

The source of her pain and turmoil and tears these last years. But the source of her relief, her joy, and the lifting of weight off her shoulders. He was alive. She knew he was alive, she knew he would come back. They had searched for so long, so long, only to have sh*tty Nishiki stroll in all beat up and bloodied in the dead of night, right before closing.

"Go away, sh*tty Nishiki, were almost closed."

"Shut up sh*tty girl, go find that old man. We need to have a talk."

Her eyes had narrowed and she huffed, but she could tell it was important. She didn't really have the energy to argue back anyways, it was a long day, she was tired. So she did as he said, and went and fetched Yomo from the back room.

"Hey, Nishiki is here. Looks pretty beat up, like he just got out of a fight. Said he wants to talk. It looks pretty important."

He had turned his head, eyes flicked to her, before nodding his acknowledgement. He stood, and silently moved into the hallway and walked behind the counter. She moved to make Nishiki a cup of coffee. There was silence. Five minutes later, she poured coffee into a cup, and set it down in front of him. He picked it up gingerly, and took a slow sip.

"This is good, sh*tty girl."

"You're not supposed to insult someone when you're complimenting them," she said, through softly gritted teeth.

"Whatever." He took another sip, closing his eyes as the taste washed over him.

"So-"

"I was chasing Torso tonight. I was going to end that miserable piece of kitten."

Yomo lifted an eyebrow, her eyes narrowed.

"And?"

"I wasn't the only one. The Doves were after him too. Not normal Doves either. Those rumors about the Q's? Those weren't rumors. Humans modified with Kakuhou. They were using kittening Kagune."

She felt anger rising in her, the same anger she felt when she learned what that kittening a**hole doctor did to him. How dare they treat people, ghoul or human, like god damn experiments.

"They were strong, the two that were fighting Torso. They started to overwhelm him"

"Did they kill him?"

"No, I stepped in. That piece of trash was mine. I started to teach those punks what's what."

"Did you kill them?"

A sip from his coffee, a sigh. "Nope. Someone saved them. A Dove. He was good. Really kittening good."

"But you beat him right? That's why you're still alive?"

"Nope. I got my kittening ass whooped."

She and Yomo exchanged a glance.

"His name is Sasaki Haise, the guy who beat me."

"Wh-"

"I started to push him, and then somehow, he flipped a switch. It was like fighting a whole new person."

"Why-"

"He has white hair, with black roots, and gray eyes. They're soft, they look naive at first, but you can tell just by looking at him that he has experienced pain. A lot of pain."

"Why are you still alive?" she blurted. She didn't mean to sound insensitive, she didn't want him to die, she was just annoyed that he kept cutting her off.

He smiled a small smile. "I had fought that fight before. It was so familiar, the feeling was the same. He crushed me. I was lying there, about to die, but I smiled. I simply said his name."

"You...said his name?" Those were the first words Yomo said. He was confused, as was she.

"Yeah. I said his name. And I watched as the recognition flitted over his face, and his eyes lit up. He looked to be in pain. He looked down at me and called me...'Nishio-senpai'."

Her eyes widened, and almost unbidden, the tears rolled down her cheeks. She couldn't help it. She looked at Yomo and she swore she could have seen an extra shine to those quiet eyes.

"He's...alive?" she choked. She looked back to Nishiki and watched as a single tear slid down his face.

"Yeah, that sh*tty idiot is alive. I called him 'Kaneki', and he responded to it. His Kagune is the same. Just like it always was. Plus, he used Tsukiyama's sword, in conjunction with Yamori's claw. He's gotten strong. Really strong."

Her lips trembled and she cried just a little bit harder. Damn that Baka for being the only one that does this to her.

"He looked to be in pain after he said my name, he looked confused. It looks like the doves f**cked with him. It doesn't look like he remembers his past, but thankfully, it doesn't look like its gone completely. I ran when he hesitated."

"He's alive..."

"Yeah, he's alive."

"Thank you."

"Don't mention it. Though I expect this coffee to be on the house for my information," he chuckled. He stood. "I'm off. Kimi is probably worried enough as it is. She'll kill me for looking like this. Though, I expect that she might be happy..."

She wasn't sure if they were tears of joy and relief on the news that he was alive, or if they were tears of sadness, knowing that he was just out of reach and that he had found himself in the jaws of the lion once again. And then he had walked in, like it was nothing, with two of his subordinates. He looked just like he always did, that nervous, naive air about him. Three coffees, he had ordered, spouting something about his nose Kagune. Baka.

He had sat down, and Yomo walked from behind the counter and sat right there in front of him. Just stared at him. He got nervous, and did that scratch thing of his. Her heart caught in her chest.

Yomo got up, and she moved. She scolded Yomo about taking care of the customer, again. She took down his order, smiling at him all the while. She turned and walked away, and heard one of his subordinates call her really cute. He agreed. She made his coffee, noticing out the corner of her eye that he was watching her. She smiled to herself, it felt...nice. Even though he didn't remember her, his gaze lingered on her. If only he could remember.

She brought him and his subordinates their coffee, and she watched as he tasted it. She watched his eyes widen, and she watched how tears fell from his eyes. He remembered. He remembered her coffee. She gave a sad smile, and tried hard not to let the tears fall. She wasn't successful. One tear, one shimmering tear formed in her eye, and he noticed.

"Sassan, your nose Kagune is no joke, this coffee is amazing! Are you crying?"
