Okay this just got very weird. From one side I'm happy since it seems that main characters are the parents and the future lovers, but on the other hand I'm finding it rather odd that Hinata is the only one of the rookies that isn't mentioned. I don't want her to be a main character but I at least expected her to have some lines in the movie. The fact that Hinata is exclusively left out is something I find rather strange, specially since she was part of the first promotional poster while Neji, Sai, Rock Lee and Tenten weren't and yet they are listed as appearing.

My guess is that she was skipped accidentally from that list. And to be honest, I'm kinda looking forward to seeing Hinata act outgoing and seductive in this movie since it'd be so out of character from what we've seen of her in the last decade. Everyone would probably crack up at her scenes.

Well, you got to remember, the first poster is most likely a indication of what the movie is going to be about or the setting. Having Hinata unzipped shirt signaled the fans that something is "odd", which is most likely the genjutsu world. Teaser poster is there to tease and it's up to fans to guess. Team Gai is somewhat hard to tell the difference if they go opposite. Well then again, Neji can be all Lee-like . So yeah, that was the purpose. I have a feeling Kakashi might be Gai level of crazy (judging him by going "super saiyan" )

Don't worry about her showing up sexy. Like I said, I do believe her scene will be like a funny moment when Naruto and Sakura see her act all wild.

Actually, she's going to be a main character in the movie because I just checked out the ANN page and her VA is with Naruto, Sakura and Minato on top of the list.

If that list on the ANN page is the same as the cast order listing that will appear in the credits... Sakura is listed first, that typically means that character is the most important character in the story...

They only listed the VAs in alphabetical order by first name.

Um, well then they really messed up with putting Toshiyuki Morikawa before Kazuhiko Inoue

But, yeah, if you split them into what is probably levels of importance in the movie they are in alphabetical order by first name- which is an odd way to do it. In Japan you would alphabetize a list of people by their surname not their first name. (Even in the west we usually alphabetize lists of people by their surname, not their first name)

Japanese alphabetical order for the main 4 characters by actor's surnames would be:

Shinohara Emi (Kushina)
Takeuchi Junko (Naruto)
Nakamura Chie (Sakura)
Morikawa Toshiyuki (Minato)

Actually, no. ANN's policy is that they do it alphabetically by their actors' first names not surnames.

How do the people at ANN decide which characters are the main ones then? Do they have japanese sources to base that cast list on or do they go with their gut?

I don't want to sound like a downer but take a look at the Blood Pirson ANN page cast, it lists: A, Killer Bee and Naruto as the main cast for that movie and I'm pretty sure the first two were only secondary in it.

I'm sure Sakura will be extremely important in this movie given that she appears in the synopsis, trailer and sketches but I'm not ready to trust the ANN cast list order 100% unless I'm sure it's based on an official source.

I doubt it. Tobi's main target is Naruto so the genjutsu's effect should be much stronger on him. It'll be easily the most heart-wrenching moment in the series because Tobi would cruelly reveal that it was all a genjutsu. Then he'll try to direct his (Naruto's) hate towards Sakura because she was the one who broke them out of the Genjutsu. I can see him go like this:

Tobi: I was simply giving you what you wanted. A life where you could live happily with your parents, so shouldn't you be directing your hate towards her? the one who took that all away from you.

If this happens, Tobi is easily the sickest, cruelest bastard in anime/manga villain history since Aizen in my book.

To which Naruto would laugh at Tobi mockingly, point to himself and say- my parents live here, I am their legacy (Kishimoto doing a variant of the way Naruto spoke of his parents in the manga). Tobi even attempting to manipulate Naruto that way would be a spectacular fail. Naruto can be willfully stupid at times, and foolish when it comes to Sasuke, but he is rather resistant to manipulation. Sasuke is the one of the former Team 7 that can manipulated that easily. (As Itachi even told Naruto)
