The "moe" movement became big in the late 90's, Naruto's one shot was in 1997, and the "tweaked" version that we know now came out in 1999. So its not surprising that Moe-Hinata became so crazy popular when that comes to light. Its just the trendy thing in the industry right now. 

Isn't she more popular in the states than in Japan? Mind you they have other anime with much better characters of the archetype in other shows. Also this has been trendy for almost two decades now?

Apparently, and if you look at the current Trend in anime, there are a lot of noticeably "Moe" characters cropping up at increasing rates the last decade or so.

In my personal opinion ( because i don't necessarily have hardcore numbers on this.) I would say that Hinata is generally LIKED--or treated ambivalently over in Japan. Where as in the West MOST Fans either love her/like her while the minority outright hate her or feel ambivalent of her existence.

To be honest, the western fan's don't view characters all that differently then the Japanese do. Rukia is UBER popular in japan for the bleach fandom, and she is in the west as well. Their opinion on Orihime also seems to line up well with one another.

But for some reason the Naruto fandom is weird as hell and breaks the pattern....

Those characters should only like as a boy's dream, but never a game changing character ploy. They ruined them because most series have them doing nothing but be there just cause.

Hinata is well liked in Japan. Most of the hate she has gotten in JP as of late mainly resulted in how she erased every single bond Naruto made with others when it came to The Last. But even so the hate isn't much considering how recent polls favor Hinata more. 

 

JP likes her, but they don't wank her like she's some angel sent from heaven to rescue us from some upcoming apocalypse like the NH west want us to believe. 

 

And I agree; for some reason the Naruto is completely opposite compared to other fandoms. Majority are more empathetic towards the bad guys that don't deserve the empathy and it it seems like everyone just came to a conclusion that Sakura must be the most hated character.

She's liked but not a lot. She's like a third wheel. I mean she wasn't consistent, so women in the series are hardly liked. That and the fact girls don't like her. Boys are too easy. Meh. Glad I'm not growing up in that generation.

I think the reason Hinata has such a large following in the west is. In part their not a lot of anime that were shown on tv *put up a hand* at the time and even the ones we had didn't have a lot of romance or pairings. Yes, people could find more anime online but those aren't what are introducing them to anime. What were introducing them were (i don't count pokemon or yu gi oh to be honest) Dragonball z gundam kenshin yu yu hakishou  and so on for older fans and Naruto bobobobo bleach and such for younger fans. Also, I think they got so fanatical over the years. Is impart because even they realize that hinata hadn't and wasn't doing much in the story. But they wanted her to get with Naruto no matter what. Either because they pitied her or insert sexual fantasy. So they had to keep over-blowing her importance and relevance in their minds to the point it got to idolatry with her.

I think a big reason people disliked Sakura came down to first impressions. Not only her attitude but also her physical characteristics...People could NOT stop grudging on Part 1 Sakura and so they became hyper sensitive to every mistake she made in part 2.

Sakura is like the Sansa Stark of ASOIAF/GOT. People never, ever ever, forget her mistakes and hold them against her even when she's suffered for them 10x

 People always come down on Hinata fans as being into submissive/pretty/moe types, and while sure that comes down to it in part its also because she has almost no personality so they can pretty much make out to be anything they want so long as they stick to "shy and likes Nardo."

Growing up in DBZ days is a safe bet of understanding. With Naruto, you end up feeling spoiled. That's how I feel.

She never did. As ive stated elsewhere Hinata as a character is Completely irrelevant to the story. there is no scene where she is involved that she could not be removed and replaced to the same or greater emotional effect by another character with better development.

You could easily remove Hinata and replace her with someone else while slightly shifting some words around and, in terms of the main story, it would cause no real difference.

It's why when people try to bring up Hinata's confession, for example, and try to say that Naruto reacted the way he did because he "realized that he loved her", I have to remind them of the type of guy Naruto was back then and that he would have reacted that way no matter who was in Hinata's general position (with or without any confessions). It could range from Sakura all the way down to some random nameless villager, but Naruto would have exploded in a rage either way because he viewed everyone in Konoha as "precious" to him, so to see any of them "die" for his sake right in front of him would result in him raging out of feelings of guilt and failure for not saving them.

 

What began in the late 90's? As for the movement towards moe. Two possible reason for it. One it a reaction to too much tsudere. When there is too much of something there is a reaction, which means that it will eventually bounce back to tsudere. Or. Two it because the otaku have currently taken over the anime industry and they love moe. Remember moe are the shy girls that are in love with the main character that react to everything bashfully and submissively. There easy to get and easy to keep and maintain. Which is part of their appeal. Tsudere guys have to work to get the soft center which is a pain for otaku who probably never talked to a woman for any long period of time that they didn't have to buy time for or are related to.

Such people want their girls ready-made for them rather than actually have to develop any meaningful relationship/understanding with them, with possibilities of low points. This only goes back to the general belief that such people don't actually want an equal partner for a relationship but simply a slave for their sexual whims.

Same thing happen in Tenkai No Shichi Ryuu too, the main protagonist Shu end up with big boobs girl while the main heroine Kluke end up with bad guy. Both are similar Shu is like Naruto and Kluke is tsundere like Sakura she always hit Shu whenever he do something stupid/idiotic. Shu love Kluke and ..... kitten what the hell happen in manga world??? Tsundere really hated now??

Not that I really care, but I was at Walmart and I stumbled across the Naruto Gaiden in Volume form, and I read the little author's notes from Kishi just to see what he had to say one thing that caught my attention was that Sarada apparently was 11 during the events of Gaiden that's about it.

So she was then at best 12 in the bolt movie and that image the pedophile made was in fact that of the prepubescent child....Great.

I would've assumed the same time Gaiden Came out which surprisingly enough was the end of this month, but maybe April-June will be when it hits. Al I know is One chapter read just to see how bad it is and that's it.

I could have sworn the hype for Gaiden was more noticeably than Boruto. Maybe it is coming much later.
