It sounds like you didn't read the manga. Because if not..i just finished watching tokyoghoul season 2 . after careful ovservation. i am feeling that the series is a bit messy. i dunno why but i feel some thimgs could have been better. but over all the series is good. i see it has certainly got way popular. i duunno if people are over rating or it has got that element that can get up the the heights.!!
It's night and day. It's pilot vs serialization edition and pilot is the anime. It is Naruto and FMA quality. It is different. Incredibly different. Too different. What you saw is nerfed x100 edition of TG, where everything is so simple and typical, while manga has more humanity, dimensional, diverse, and many more. The buildup, the momentum, everything is explored greatly in the manga. It's not the anime that made it awesome. It's the manga that made it awesome. Anime is there to give you the curiousity.
This is the series that shocked people that it beat Naruto in its own game where that one is more popular yet still lost. This is the series that manga readers got so pissed off unlike others series, they would be like "meh it's ok." This is the series that pretty much got some elements that I wanted in my story. This is the series that ressurected me to know what quality is. This is the series that told me women can't work in series excuse is load of kitten. This is the series that side characters not supposed to get this amount of quality excuse is load of kitten.

? No, really no one wanted that kind of ending from TG. Ishida basically slapped his fans in the faces with that ending. I've talked to many fans who read TG before the anime has even started, and the ending still has some of them butthurt XD
