let me try and ease your confusion a bit firegirl. to understand Sakura you need to understand the progression of Sakuras feelings for both Sasuke and Naruto.
Introducing Sakura chapter 3: in this moment we meet sakura for the first time. we come to understand two things about her and her feelings for Sasuke which are a clear fangirl crush jsut like all the other girls. this is clear as she reacts the same as the others. Also she is a determined girl who wants to do anything for her crush.
The bench scene; three beginnings: in this moment Naruto disguised as Sasuke due to a mischievious impulse comes to Sakura who is having a day dream about a shining Sasuke complimenting her forehead and acknowledging her dreams. then in the very next moment as she despairs of it or anything like it ever happeneing it does happen. Sasuke haloed in light stands before her and Speaks the exacty words of her fantasy. this is a stunning moment for Sakura as her fantasy plays out. she doesnt even notice as ""Sasuke"" says in a joking tone thats something naruto would say. she is then asked by ""Sasuke"" what she thinks of Naruto.
here we see a new beginning. she explains why she hates naruto and finds him annoying. because """to her""" she feels he is always interfering with her love and likes to see her fail. All she wants she confessess is for Sasuke to acknowledge her. This is the beginning for Naruto and Sakura as Naruto states to himself that he finally understands WHY he likes Sakura so much.
together they lean in as if to kiss. But in what will become an ongoing trope between Naruto and Sakura with romantic moments. the outdated milk naruto drank earlier comes back to haunt him and he is forced to run off. leaving a star struck Sakura behind with what has been changed from a crush to a feeling of love as the onject of ehr affection has acknowledged her and almsot kissed her. thus we have the beginning of Sakura to Sasuke and the feelings she holds for him.
and lastly we have Sakuras feelings for Naruto and the beginnings of what would become NaruSaku. Sasuke finally frees hismelf from Narutos trap, and goes looking for him. he encounters Sakura still at the bench and who is acting for all intents as the same fangirl saying hes shy. in this moment he asks where naruto is and sakura tries to dismiss their other teamate as useless and obnoxious.
here we uncover a part of Sakura that is not so good. her shallowness and misunderstanding of naruto. Sasuke hears this and angrilly tells her off more convinced then ever that she is nothing but a shallow fan girl.
Sakura is left stunned and hurt as Sasuke calls her the same thing she called Naruto earlier. Annoying.
she is left to contemplate this and wonders if Naruto felt the same way. She resolves in this moment to be nicer to him, and thus with this one single resolution to herself. She begins her long slow and steady change.
as the story progresses we see Sakura continuously be impressed and amazed at Narutos cosntant growth and suprising power and courage, and of course offset at times by his immaturity and thoughtlessness. ((leading to occasional Shonen fun))
The Chunin exams; were falling apart: we also see her feelings for sasuke change from ador to worry as Sasuke progresses further and further into darkness and envy as Naruto seems to grow in leaps and bounds.
She also progresses as during the chunin first test we see her about to make what at the time would be an incredible sacrafice for naruto the boy she claimed to hate once. She is willing to tank her and Sasukes chances to advance as chunin to preserve Narutos dream. THis is PRIME moment between them and msot especially for Sakura. it angers me how often anti Sakura and Anti NaruSaku people dismiss this moment. A moment when Sakura who loves Sasuke would be willing to sacrafice her entire teams chunin opportunity to save Narutos dream for him to save him from the embarrassment of having to quit. Can one imagine what Sasukes reaction would have been???? he would have been furious at her.
This comes to a head in the forest of death as fangirl Sakura finally does what no fangirl ever does. She tells Sasuke off for being a coward and compares him to Naruto. this suprises Sasuke and he remembers his own motviation to avenge fhis clan fighting orochimaru with a renewed ferocity.
Next we have the chunin prelims. here we see her again progress from doubting naruto to admiting she was wrong and to cheering him louder than anyone else. even to the point of feeling so amzing at his win.
and lastly she feels envious and amazed at Narutos seemingly improbable victory over Neji. and her inner thoughts over how much she admires him and his ability to make her feel like she needs to do her best as well.
The roof; the one who saved you was Naruto: finally Sasuke who seems to at least be trying to change at this point in spite of the curse seal drops what has to eb the biggest bomb to date of the story at her. that Naruto the loser, the one she hated, was the one who saved her from the maddened Gaara. it is a singular moment for her as she looks at naruto with that fond soft smile on her face and watches him .
what makes this important is that it is Sasuke who tells her this. Sasuke the one person who would have no reason to lie and who she would believe over anyone even Kakashi himself. Sasuke tells her this and it is a moment of clarity for her.
the leaving; Sakura thanks: In one moment all sakuras worst fears come to pass. though she trys everything shy of violence to convince him Sasuke is leaving. in a last ditch desperate effort she begs, pleads, confesses her love, and at last says shell go with him. Offering him evrything if he will only stay with her.
Sasuke does not accept and knocks her out leaving her on the bench as he leaves for his destiny.
the retrieval team leaves; I trust you completely. this is the biggest moment so far, with a promise of a lifetime on Narutos lips, heart, soul, sakura sees Naruto trully for the first time. she sees how far hes gone and how far he is still willing to go for her. And she comes to a silent realization. She trusts him she trusts him implicitly.
when he returns we have what i personalyl feel is the final tipping point from Sasuke to Naruto. where she in despari looks out the window and Naruto brings her back with his renewed promise and lighthearted smile. She holds her heart and smiles back. but she also says a very important line. I have to make you wait for awhile but next time well do it together. She makes her decision and it is Naruto. She will grow stronger for him and the promise he made to her.
this for me is the moment when she falls in love with Naruto. not an illusion or a disguised person. But the real deal, raw and unfettered by lies or the need to protect one another. She takes upon herself the burden of her own promise to be there for naruto and she begins trianing with Tsunade to this end.
she does not declare her love as it is a small but Important shift much like the change from crush to love for Sasuke was.
further events happen through part 2 wich continue this change and growth for Sakura. but the timeline and changes are clearly delineated by events and certian people such as Sai or Yamato.
these are the msot telling moments though in the timeline, and they are why I have always maintained that the bench scene is important. and why it needs to be brought up again by Sakura to Sasuke. It is where she fell for him, where the illusion created by Naruto of a caring kind Sasuke who acknowledged her dreams comes from.
She does need some closure on that moment and I hope she gets it soon
Great, great, great. Had me rereading several scenes I'd quite forgotten about. Thanks a bunch!
