It's been stated before, but it more or less comes down to Naruto's mental image of Part 1 Sakura as a Sasuke fan-girl. He has all these images in his head of Sakura being head over heels in love with Sasuke, it's no surprise he's confused by the sudden confession. On top of that, he senses an ulterior motive, which is more or less the main point of confusion, IMO.
Sai's later comment, about how she was prepared to accept his hate, seems sort of important in relation to that line. After Naruto says that, Sakura pretty much blows a gasket.
"I'm the one who decides how I feel! If you hate me just say so!"
Does that sound like she was prepared to accept his hate?
It's also interesting to note how Naruto responded with that statement, rather than with something conclusive like, "You don't love me" or "I don't love you anymore Sakura-chan". Unless some people really believe that Naruto hates Sakura now, there's nothing conclusive about that scene.

The quote that will forever blind NaruHina and SasuSaku fans from the truth. Anywho the real question should be why SasuSaku keeps getting a popular fan base? Seriously, what has Sasuke even done to show he loves Sakura?

I asked the same question everytime. Probably because the fans are just hoping Sasuke would return the feelings someday. Same with NH where Naruto would return Hinata's feelings. Both ships are just clinging on to hope unlike NS where there is actually a development.

But isn't Naruto the one who is lying to himself the most? He conviced himself Sakura loves only Sasuke, refuses to see when she flirts with him and still thinks he will bring Sasuke back to normal even if numerous people said he's not the same person at all.
Hmmmm, yes that is true, well I don't know then. Gahhh, I just wish we don't have to wait another 50 chapters or so for everything to get cleared up to see who wins or loses.
But that's who Naruto is, a man who's willing to do everything to make Sakura happy, even if it means not actually be with her, what a selfless chap, and to do things others can't do or even attempt to do.

Could the argument be made that the confession was possibly the end of Narusaku?

Well, I think Naruto's talk with Kushina helps our cause a lot, so this is not over by a long shot. Plus, one would argue that Naruhina would be dead after Hinata's confession, for SasuSaku (shudders......), her "thought" of that one dude, you know what forget it, I don't want to go into that because I don't have a powerful response to that yet.
Edit: This calls for a song , starts at :50ish
to Amrikandesi: thanks man, I needed a good explanation for that thought was drawing a blank on that one.

Well i think it's safe to say that NaruSaku still has the highest chance of happening by a longshot.
We still have that Kushina flashback and in chapter 540 Sakura thought about how Sasuke is not a good guy, so that is probably not good development at all.

Lot of development after the confession actually. But this story is not about romance.

I think that would work.
Or she could just flat out smooch him for a few minutes. That'd work too.

Read my stuff! Some of the stories are even finished! Catwho on Fanfiction.net

Well now I just wanna skip the entire story to see that...
But yeah, what do you guys think about Naruto meeting Sakura in a few chapters and he stops and stares at her and tells her that
she reminds him of Kushina his mother which makes Sakura blush.

Oh please, this is Naruto we're talking about, virtually anything that doesn't have to do with fisticuffs would sound crazy. And don't you think, he would explain to Sakura that he seen his mother in his subconcious within a subconcious. Crazy yes, but so crazy that it's believable and he wouldn't joke about his parents.

Could the argument be made that the confession was possibly the end of Narusaku?

So far, I've only seen two scenes that could be argued to be the 'end of NaruSaku'.
The first was the POAL. Naruto saw first-hand just how much Sakura loved Sasuke, put aside his feelings, and made a promise to make her happy. It's been argued that he gave up on her at that point, after realizing the magnitude of her feelings. The problem with that line of thinking, though, is that the scene didn't end with Naruto's thought process. Instead, it ended with Sakura's, as she realized, "More than anyone else, he's always understood me." As it was Sakura's thoughts the scene ended with, the characters' feelings remained unresolved.
The second was her confession to Naruto. The thought process on Naruto's side was that Sakura still loves Sasuke, thus she must, to some extent, be lying. But once again, the scene didn't end with Naruto's perspective. Sakura took the 'lying' comment personally, and was clearly upset by it.
On top of that, regardless of whether or not Sakura was still in love with Sasuke, the confession scene did nothing to resolve Naruto's feelings. The only way NaruSaku could have truly 'ended' would be if Naruto decided to stop loving Sakura, or if he finally came to terms with the fact that she would never love him and decided to move on. Since neither of these conditions were shown to have been met (keeping in mind he didn't once think of Hinata during that arc, thus him 'moving on' is just fan speculation), it can be safely assumed that NaruSaku is not 'dead' yet.
Besides, if Kishi was really trying to end NaruSaku with the confession scene, then demonstrating Naruto's selfless love for her in Sai's flashback and having Sai flat-out comment on Naruto's love for her right beforehand is pretty lousy writing, IMO.
Well, now that he's heard his parents' love-story, I think he understands that it's not impossible for Sakura's feelings to change. My guess though, is that he's going to make a somewhat selfish confession before a big battle, and leave before hearing her response. That way Sakura will have a chance to reflect on her own feelings while Naruto risks his life to protect everyone. Then, at the end of the battle, I'm guessing we'll see a scene similar to the 2011 OVA, where Naruto and Sakura will finally understand each others' feelings.
