Requiem For a Dream- 8/10

Mainly because I like the music, and the acting of Ellen Burstyn blew me away, even this second time.

The Dark Knight (Bluray) - 9.5/10

I FINALLY got to watch this film!

It played out differently to my expectations, but I enjoyed it. I really liked how they borrowed an angle from the comic The Killing Joke and had the Joker trying to prove that anyone could go crazy like him, given the right circumstances. I would have liked to have seen more of the Joker's history - how/why he became the way he is. However, Yoko had a really good point in our IM conversation - that giving the Joker history might have risked making the viewers feel pity for him. The Joker isn't someone who should be pitied, he doesn't WANT pity. Heath Ledger portrayed him brilliantly.

I felt it was a shame that we didn't see much of Two-Face (hence the 0.5 deduction in the score), I liked him. Some critics had said the plot was overcomplicated, but I was able to understand it and enjoy it. I would love to watch it again right now - if only we didn't have Obama being sworn in today, and the new (and final) series of Galactica on tonight. XD

Tomorrow it is.

That's about what I'd rate it, too. There were a couple minor problems in believability and Bale's voice was too gravelly, but it was about as close to perfectly enjoyable a movie as I've ever seen.

The new Bat-franchise is definitely borrowing from the better stuff. Batman Begins used stuff from Year One and like you said, this reminds one of The Killing Joke (which is probably overrated, but only because everybody rates it so high). It was also cool how the Joker kept on changing his back-story, just like in The Killing Joke.

I think that it was important that we not get any real back-story on the Joker. It's not only unimportant; it's a distraction. He just is. He's a force of nature or "an engine of chaos". Plus, if they added his back-story, then the movie might get a bit long. happy.gif

And yeah, Ledger really nailed it. He didn't just play it as "ha, ha, killing people is fun". The Joker was laughing because it hurt and because he was mad and damn sure that everybody else was going to hurt as well.

The last movie that I watched?

I just watched Sunshine again. I'd give it a 8. Pinbacker was a bit much at the end.

I was watching Oldboy, but I had heard about how it's disturbing so I caved and read some spoilers. And now, I've stopped. I don't think that I could handle it that well.

Though I am too young to remember the actual interview this movie is based upon I loved it, Frank Langella is a great Richard Nixon.

Underworld - Rise of the Lycans(2009) 7.5/10

It was a decent action flick, just not much added to the over all story and being a prequel. Ya already know the ending before hand.

Bolt - 10/10

I admit it. I'm a sucker for animated movies, and the last couple of years has kept me happy enough I guess. Every time I see a new animated flick is in production, the kid in me (which is very much alive, thank you) goes bananas (see how i didn't even use profanity there?) with glee, and I'll watch it as soon as it starts airing in the cinemas here.
This is how it was with Bolt. I saw a trailer for a movie about a dog, with super powers... or at least that's what he thinks. His whole life, he has been led to believe he's some kind of super dog, and thus his life has always been... well, a movie I guess. A sad story really, especially when he escapes to save "his person", Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus, but she's not there too long), from the EVIL GREEN EYED MAN.
Said green eyed man has a conection to Bolt's natural enemies; cats! And when he meets Mittens, he'll bring the city down to get that cat to take him back to Penny so he can save her life, and so starts their journey across America (or "the entire world" as Mittens put it), where they meet the single most awesome hamster in the history of awesome hamsters (yeah I know... short history), and his name is Rhino (and he's 1/16th wolf and some wolverine sprinkled in somewhere... or so he says). This hamster has some serious BALL... a HAMSTER BALL to be straight with you, and he is insane and a huge fan of Bolt (from the magic box). Together the three of them forms a team more powerful than any Power Ranger team has ever been able to claim. One slightly delusional dog, one sarcastic loner of a cat... and a hamster... in a ball... HOW IS THAT NOT AWESOME?

The story is so and so, but I enjoyed it. The dialogue however, is where they struck gold. The voice actors and script are great, and I loved every single bit of it. The seemingly random pigeons who just knows they've 'seen that dog somewhere', the realisation of Bolt's lack of powers... all so perfectly spun together into an animated movie that I think is far superior to movies like Wall-E.

Great stuff, I loved it! And to make things better... I didn't have to stare at John Travolta's butt-chin at all, since only his voice is in this movie... oh, happiness!

GO WATCH THIS NOW!

A.I. Artificial Intelligence = 6/10

I'd heard a lot of different thins about this movie and mixed reactions, so I finally decided to load it up on my Blockbuster Online queue and watch it.

This is one weird ass movie.

I honestly didn't know what to make of it in a lot of ways. It's got to be about the most disjointed film I think I've ever watched, it literally changes gears and genres about three times through the movie. The first part of the movie was a bit of a drama ordeal. Then a bit later down the road we literally hit a brick wall and our momentum takes us in a completely different direction. The third act was completely out there and made little sense whatsoever.

As someone who writes myself, I was particularly thrown by how the film ended. It broke a good deal of general storytelling rules that are there for a reason. Little was really resolved aside from one of the main threads and at the end I ended up sitting there with a blank stare, thinking the film was something of a mess. It literally felt like at some point during the movie they backed themselves into a corner and had absolutely no clue how to resolve it.

The reason I even gave it the score I did is for the effects and the second part of the film in general. I'm admittedly a complete sucker for futurstic style in movies and the second part of the movie absolutely popped. Special effects reigned supreme there and it was really a flashy spectacle to behold. Jude Law as Gigalo Joe was also a good draw in the film as he and David form something of a bond; despite the fact that the two are synthetic, I found myself feeling for them, before I was abruptly reminded they weren't real, of course.

I'm honestly not sorry I watched it, but I'm not sure I'd watch the whole thing again. The whole second part up to when David and Joe made it to the flooded Manhattan was the highlight of the movie. Otherwise there's so much about it that made me scratch my head that I don't think I'd really touch it again.

Friday the 13th 2009 7.5/10

So Jason is back and thats just fine, but how would it measure up?

They basically are rebooting the franchise from after part one. The movie even starts with the death of Jason's mother.

This movie is not a period piece, meaning its set in modern times with a stereotypical group of teens you want to get slayed asap, going camping. We then get three classic scenarios mushed together as: 1.A couple goes exploring around the creepy cabin 2.The annoying guy runs off to take a leak 3.Sex. of course theres sex. And so Jason waste no time coming after the group, even doing some kills we can remember from the older friday the 13ths. Anyway we then skip ahead to 2 months later as MORE teens ge tready to spend some time near crystal lake except at rich boy's summer house. Ill stop there, but basically its an old time set up you'd expect. While its nothing new and the movie gets easy to predict, I liked being able to enjoy classic slasher horror. In a time where horror in america has been diluted by japanese horror films usually involving electronics killing their victims, Friday the 13th brings back some pleasant memories of a simple time, where pyschopaths ripped your head off, not a grisly death from a fax machine or something.

The kills are pretty good, especially the ones in the lake. Jason himself is not as intimidating as Jasons' past but he gets the job done.

This remake tries HARD not to mess up the franchise and it suceeds while at the same time not doing much new. But its still good and enjoyable.

I don't think there's too much to really mess up with that one. As an admitted fan of the Friday films, I'll still admit they're generally simple. Big man in hockey mask kills stupid teenagers and absolutely refuses to die. Wouldn't want it any other way.

It was about time for a reboot though. As sad as it makes me, Freddy vs Jason vs Ash just wasn't going to happen and they were reaching near the end to nab a plot in the first place; Jason X was proof.

I don't know why, but I liked the one with the psychic a lot. I think it was just actually seeing someone who could fight back in an appreciable manner.

Dark City = 8/10

Just watched this one last night. I've got to say, I really enjoyed it. I mean, really enjoyed it.

I was actually reminded vaguely of Blade Runner at a point or two during the film in the theme. It seemed to focus on humanity in general and what makes us so. Which, of course, reminded me a bit of Blade Runner. the similarities pretty much began and ended there though. It focuses on a completely different aspect of said theme than the aforementioned classic.

This film was without a doubt taking full use of old style noir. The general feel of the city itself cast off this 40's or 50's hard boiled vibe you'd find in your old fashioned noir fiction. It's an interesting backdrop for what's essentially a hybrid of psychological drama, sci-fi and thriller. It creates something of an odd synergy that felt rather unque to me and worked well.

I can't really say a whole lot about the plot without giving away the surprises and mystery of the city itself we find our protagonist in. All I can say is that if you can, watch the directors cut of the film. It begins differently and allows for even more of the mystery of the city to hold early on, unraveling slower than in the original cut, which gave a decent grasp of the bsic concepts in a noir style opening narration.

I'd honestly reccomend it. It can be slightly trippy, but definitely in a good way. Worth a watch, I'd say.

Madea's Family Reunion: 9/10

Classic black drama (Finding new love, abusive relationships, mothers doesn't care for their children but themselves, etc.) and comedy from the Atlanta-native "ghetto" grandmother, Madea. tongue.gif Tyler Perry does bring those issues forward to his movies.

Gran Torino - 9/10

I can't describe the full awesomeness of Clint Eastwood, his potrayal of an anti-hero successfully finishes with the pre-last scene. And the spirit of his character was really well accented with his will.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman - 9/10

It's my second time seeing it in one day, the classic black drama and comedy that Tyler Perry continues to bring his viewers. Not one of my favorites, but I still can't help but enjoy it... getting me ready to see the movie-version of Madea Goes to Jail (XD). The lost / growing relationships, people trying to get their acts back together, giving thanks to what you have, and of course... the lovely mother who pretends not to care ANYTHING about her family who attempts taking her house arrest 'collar' off with a block of butter. It took a little long to develop, but I didn't get bored at all. Some moments had me on the edge of my seat, and the ending had me very confused. XD Oh well. Good movie overall. Meryl Streep was phenomenal. I managed to hate her in this movie and love her at the same time. XD Only Meryl~
