Well for my end I can see why it may be true. and Sympathize a little.
the key is that the dogs death happens after a number of other tragedies in his life. the death of his parents, then the death of his dog, the destruction of his village all on top of each other, one after another would be a harsh blow for anyone much less a small child.
In a funny way its similar to sasukes tragedy. Sasuke lost evrything all in one night and had himself tortured near to death by his own brother. his pain had to be enormous.
We oft think that Narutos tragedy is the worst of the two but i disagree. Sasukes is far worse. for Naruto all he got were harsh glares and being ignored.
the key is how the three handled their tragedies. naruto handled his by becoming loud and obnoxious in order to get attention. but he also found a goal. a goal to protect evryone by becoming the strongest he could become.
Sasuke became obsessed with revenge and hate and power and it cost him evrything.
Nagato has also become obessessed with revenge and pain. and is determined to share it with evryone.
Naruto handled his the best. by becoming better then the beast and by being stronger for the burden he carried.
the others became monsters

I'm not that cynical as some of you others are being. Pein lost things he held dear, his parents and his dog. He had no friends apart from Konan and Yahiko (who dies) so how is his reasons poor? If I lost my parents and my dog I'd probably go a little emo and psycho too.

Yes it does. remember he had everything. heck read my story When I ruled the world.
Sasuke had it all in the palm of his hand. But he threw it all away and its cost him. respect, honor, friendship. Heck even his revenge.
when the time comes the lessons going to sink in and then if he thinks hes in hell now.

Did you mean Yahiko? Before I saw read the description for the spoilers, I saw Yahiko yelling and Nagato crying, and I thought maybe Yahiko turned on him, or something. But seriously though, anything would be better than loosing it that badly because your dog died. It's sad, yes, but if it was the last straw that broke the camel's back, he could have said that. Basically, as it is if this is true, Nagato is equating his parent's death with that of his dog's. Maybe Nagato has some serious psychological condition or something?

I would love if it were only because of the dog, thought just for my own selfish reason. While I think Kishimoto has totally screwed up Part 2, I don't think eve he'd do something like that.
Most likely it's the last straw or some kind of symbol or representation of what's going happening to him and village and that he'll connect that tragedy with the overall tragedy of the village. I highly doubt it's just the dog in isolation.
