I have this exact problem, except mine might be a little different. I should be able to provide a temporary solution.
My screen makes a high pitched buzzing noise if its too bright, then it will shut off just like you say. But If I keep the screen dimmed, say at half brightness, then the screen will stay on.
My problem is probably hardware based because Dell just replaced my screen 2 weeks ago. Now I've got to get it replaced again.
Does this help you at all?

The lack of speed is probably because of the fact I rarely turn it off, but it's not always the cause. How about a Toshiba laptop, are those decent?

I've used a number of Toshiba laptops for work and my latest personal laptop is a Toshiba. I haven't experienced any unexpected hardware issues with them.
I would recommend that you google the particular model you're considering (of any brand) for consumer reviews. You'll at least get a sense of what kind of experience others have had with the specific model. Of course, there is always a risk that even with positive reviews the particular machine you purchase could have some odd defect. But then, that's what warranties are for

Toshiba laptops are good but HP's are better because they use Samsung displays which are the best on the market in terms of color depth and pixels. Just make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM in your new laptop and if possible, I would try to go for 4GB.

shad, i'm pretty sure your lcd screen went kaput.
the touchscreen at my workplace is doing the same thing... we leave it on 24/7.
lcds have a life of about 10000hrs before burning out... D:
so yea... best to take it to a computer shop and repair it.

Got a new temporary laptop, will become permanent if I finish 10th grade with straight A's, and when I actually do drive with my permit.
Curious....it seems like my old laptop's screen troubles may be related to the battery charger.... my mom was showing me that it worked....unplugged. I left it alone for a few minutes and then it turned off because battery was gone, then I plug it in. It turns dark..... odd
