As much as I love the shipping wars in this fandom, I do have to admit that the Naruto fandom is by far the worst fandom I have had the fortunate/misfortune of being apart of. 

there's gonna be worse eventually luffy trust me but yeah i guess your right and guys like forneverworld make me facepalm the way he puts hinata on a throne and bashes sakura he made a hinata haters without logic videoabout a year ago which made me roll my eyes and laugh at the same time cuz he seemed pretty pissed thats when i unsubbed and still to this day he's biased as ever but some things never change

There was when I was active in the fandom, at least. I couldn't search for either pairing (I shipped both) without coming across deviations devoted to pairing apologetics and/or bashing. I can't imagine they've stopped.
Naruto is the only fandom I've been in that resembles those shipping wars. Popularity and widespread recognition plays a part, I guess.

I see... NS is the only ship I take this serious, at the point of joining the fanclub. The others are just ordinary shipping.

In the Sonic fandom, I shipped both SonAmy and SonSal because they are both plausible in their own universe. SonSal in SatAM/Archie (Archie was based on SatAM), and SonAmy in the games (though in the games the ship isn't confirmed, just a possibility). That said, I think I liked SonAmy just a little more. And, since I've been inactive in the fandom, I don't really ship SonSal anymore. Maybe it's because I hardly give a darn about the comics anymore, since lawsuits forced them to reboot.

In the Naruto fandom, I personally can't ship Naruto with anyone else but Sakura. They just make sense. I guess for the most part I need to see characters interacting, and it has to make sense, before I can ship them.

One day, y'all are gonna look back at this topic and chuckle at how silly it all is.  It's what I did with my previous behavior during the Harry Potter craze (I'm a HarryxHermione shipper, yes even at the present).  

 

Anyway, I don't know why it's surprising that OP will get hate messages.  Every fandom has its idiots.  Hell, they may just be trolling the hell out of you and they couldn't careless about any pairings.  I've even seen this same behavior here in this website (one need only look at the chapter threads).  It's important to remember that it's the internet, abide by the theory postulated by Penny Arcade:

I'm not surprised, but it still makes me angry. And nobody's even trolling me. I hate to be a witness to blatant disregard for other's feelings. Internet tough guys are selfish people.

If I was you I'd do the same. I got my share of death threats and insults already. This is the only Naruto related site I go on and that's it. My life is hectic as it is already. I have no time for little children.

Sorry that all that hate was directed at you, it really does suck how awful some ppl can be. This is personally why I no longer participate in the shipping wars, or comment on something NS related, especially youtube. Like you I have gotten hate when I was in an area that was apparently supporting NS, it can be such a pain. This forum is the only place I really participate because I know Im safe here from trolls and haters, that and tumblr I guess. I don't enjoy the actual Naruto fandom as a whole because there's a lot of hate in it. I express my love for NS here and with only select people, and even then their the risk of some idiot coming in and ruining things. I hope you feel better and know that you can always come here

I live troll free for the most part. Aside from the occasions when I see trolling on Facebook or YouTube and foolishly get involved, the only trolls I really get are on other sites, and they target me over my religious beliefs. Don't react to them and they won't stick around. That is hard to do sometimes, though.

Today I posted a comment on Youtube stating that I like NS alot. I got 20 hate messages from angry fans claiming I was pathetic. The worst part is, I posted it on a NS music video. This isn't the only time this has happened though. Actually, I get hate messages everyday. I have death threats, insults, and mean words thrown at me everyday! The Naruto fandom is truly cruel. After thinking about it, I decided to leave the Naruto fandom. I will still ship NS, and be active on tumblr. I just refuse to get involved in the pairing debates or fandom in general. I hope I can come on here every once in a while to discuss chapters. I don't even know anymore... I really just want to quit watching Naruto too. Well, that's it.

Imagine how many death threats the creators of those NS videos receive. They spent a lot of their time and effort to make NS videos only to get a lot of death threats. Makes me furious. If I were a genius hacker, I'd have destroyed their computer already.
