Awesome! a_thumbs.gif

--------------

GT utterly ruined Gohan's character. He went from this bada$$ who could defeat Cell to...Saiyaman -.-

Wasn't just GT that did that. He became Saiyaman in the Buu Saga. I guess there was always Mystic Gohan, though I rolled my eyes about him having more hidden powers.

Hm I wasn't that into shipping when I watched Dragon Ball Z, but I remember liking Yamcha/Bulma. I don't know what I was thinking. biggrin.gif

Yamcha/Bulma probably had more to stand on than any of the other Bulma pairings, at least IMO. Unfortunately, Yamcha committed the unspeakable crime of not being a Saiyan, so he stopped being relevant, and Vegeta needed a son apparently. So, boom...instant pairing. laugh.gif

I liked Gohan a lot more after he grew up. I remember absolutely despising that little brat who decided to stand around and watch all his friends get pummeled to death, apparently having lost his will to fight somehow (seriously, how do you lose that?), only to just get it back after watching a random android get decapitated. The Saiyaman arc sort of turned him into a comic relief, but it wasn't any more ridiculous than some of the stuff his father did, so I didn't mind too much. I sort of saw that arc as being a peaceful interim arc to begin with, so I guess I watched it through a different lens than the rest of the series.

The Fusion/Mystic stuff in that part of the series was irritating, but I thought having a villain I found interesting for once more than made up for it. Just my opinion, though. happy.gif

I think the series leading up to the Cell Saga was the best and brightest. After the Cell Saga things started to fizz out. People started to get way too strong in proportion. And I hate the way (adult/teenage) Gohan got reduced to a B-rated Fighter, where Goku and Vegeta kept their edge. It basically made everything that happened in the Cell Saga worthless. All the build up they had for his character got ruined.

That's not it. Toriyama was sick of the series and was trying to piss off the fan base, so he could stop. It failed.

I mainly hated it because virtually in ever arc he had hidden powers waiting to be unlocked with both the Frieza and Buu arcs have it handed to him.

And I just hated Gotenks. Trunks and Goten cheapened SSJ so bad.

The good thing about the Buu Saga was Buu, and that should have been it. The dude was literally indestructible, as he could regenerate in a molecular level. What is so funny is that they actually kept trying to destroy Buu, but Buu destroy them.

Dum Dums

as for the pairings.

They always did that, EVERYONE'S dwarfed by the saiyans/ saiya-jins. Besides Gohan falling behind was was logical because he wasn't practicing and focused on his studies while Goku and Vegeta are constantly training and pushing themselves. That's just realism.

Ehh, if he wanted to quit all he had do was quit. I think he just did it without thinking cause it said somewhere he admitted to not planning things out BECAUSE he did not intend it to last that long. He wanted to stop so he could spend more time with his family.

Not necessary when money is involved, plus the editor who kept screaming at him "CONTINUE, CONTINUE!" (not saying it literally).

There was also an overwhelming response from his fanbase wanting to continue. The fans were also the reason that Goku was brought back into the story. Originally Toriyama wanted Gohan to take the mantle off since he was being forced to continue. But the fans wanted Goku back, so he was.

If it was about the money he would have continued regardless of if he wanted to quit or not, no? Also it was because the editor and fans kept screamed CONTINUE at him that he made the Androids, Cell and Buu sagas anyway.

Er... I guess this turned into more of a discussion about Dragon Ball the series in and of itself. It saddens me to learn that Toriyama was unhappy with continuing the story by the android saga, especially since like many I felt the android/cell saga was the best part of Z.

I agree with Nate River about how annoying it seemed to be spoon fed the fact that Gohan was so strong and had so much latent power when he could never summon it himself when it counted.

As far as Gohan becoming b-class in the Buu saga, it's tied to fans wanting Goku back. It's up for debate as to who's strongest SSJ3 Goku or Mystic Gohan, but I think most conclude that it's M Gohan. So it's not like he's swept under the rug... he's just... secretly got more unlocked potential again that again he can't willing call forth on his own.

Couples and thoughts (<^ is otaku for sure):

1) KrillenX18
Mostly as a "good for him" thing. I was always curious as to other than his noble act, what made her choose him, and while there were a few (very few) blips on the radar as to her showing a soft side to him, I wonder what they were like when it was just them. Did she continue to command him around like a servant? Tsunadere to a "regular guy". I guess it's why I prefer it over the other couples with Tsunaderes.

2) VidelXGohan
I thought it was cute how she eventually was okay with showing her softer side because of him and how she brought him out of his shell.

3) VegetaXBulma
I thought this pairing was very interesting. They're both very blunt personalities, but it's interesting that Vegeta would allow himself to be talked to by someone the way that Bulma talks to him. I'm sure in fact that she probably won most of their arguments. It's on some level a rivalry, they both hate losing, and probably appreciate that about each other, and because of that they understand each other on a level that another person would not have. So while Bulma's sudden drop of Yamcha was sudden, I think this was a far more interesting relationship.

4) YamchaXBulma
Kind of a standard sub-romance. I never thought it was anything special, and in a shounen that seemed to be aimed at really young kids, that's to be expected. There were never really any interesting developments just the constant loop of arguments for comedic affect, so again, I have no issues with it being replaced by VxB.

5) GokuXChiChi
This one drives me nuts. I understand where she's coming from. Goku is naive and still very child-like in a lot of his views so she essentially has to be both parents. Especially since Goku didn't have a brother, or much of a family for a while growing up because of his circumstances, he may have initially treated Gohan more as a little brother. But she is so un-yielding in her views on how to raise Gohan, even when it mattered for the entire world that he participate in the cell games, that I just blatantly disliked her character in Z. I thought her and Goku were a hilarious duo in Dragon Ball. I understand she's probably mostly there for comedic affect but I hate how unrelenting and commanding she is all the time.

On the subject of Goku X Bulma, which is a crack pairing, since nothing ever happened other than a misleading scene in the anime (not sure if it happened in the manga) where while alone on Namek she sees Goku in the cloud and imagines he's become handsome. I guess she was "the girl" in Dragon ball so everyone expected them to get together, but she was more of an older sister type. I could understand if it had happened, although shounen-type mangas of the past seemed less oriented on relationships versus the ones today. But to me it just wouldn't have made sense. Is anyone here a fan of this crack pairing?
