That's not the search engine, and I already knew about that one. The search engine is quite useful if you need to try and find an older fanfic you remember the title and series of, but you don't have bookmarked\on alerts\etc. Which is especially useful if you're reading a fanfic on one computer and want to switch over to another computer, which I do a LOT.

You haven't experienced the full cofusion of modern gender relations until you've heard an angry group of women yelling, "We want tentacles!" at an all-night Hentai-fest.

Lol, thanks for the link to the filter, Derock, but that's not what I meant. I meant the actual search engine for looking up stories based on summary or title.

- Go to post your story exactly as you normally would, but pick a different category that is still working (Code Geass is, for example).
- When you've posted the new story, click on 'Edit/Add Chapters'.
- You will be brought to the working properties pages (or should be). Otherwise you may need to do the 'content' swap.
- Change the category from there. It will bring up an error page as soon as you change it to Naruto. However, if you get the error, it means it worked.
Supposedly this method was tested by the author NeonZangetsu, and I guess it works since he has new fics posted since the website started going bonkers.
I don't feel like switching to Media Miner. Ugh. Time for someone to make a new fanfiction site, I guess.

Media Miner is just plain bad. I hate having to upload anything on there.
Sounds like FF.net needs a revamp.

However, I'm not sure who else, at this point, could legitimately make a viable competitor to Fanfiction.net. It used to be their major competitors included Usenet, e-mail mailing lists, etc., but those have mostly dried up. As fanfic authors, we're sort of stuck with fanfiction.net if we want any sort of real visibility for our fanfiction.

A decade? The site launched in 1998 for goodness' sake, there is no possible way you saw the site in 1998 on the spot and said "YUP THIS SUCKS MAKE ANOTHER PLZ". Stop fibbing.

I was a member of the FFML (fanfiction mailing list). The FFML (founded... 1992, IIRC) had a big rivalry with FF.net, largely dealing with FF.net's complete lack of tools (at the time) for beta reading, horribly arbitrary rule enforcement (there was a long period where, if a rule violation was reported, the fic was deleted without any investigation to see if the rule had ACTUALLY been violated or not... but then, sometimes a fic would be reported for a legitimate violation of the rules, and was never deleted), instability, and more. When the owner of the server that ran the FFML passed away, the FFML collapsed entirely, forcing many of us who were a part of the FFML to emigrate to its rival, Fanfiction.net, around 2001-2. There were several attempts to set up rival sites that were more FFML-like, but none of them succeeded. Fanfiction.net has incorporated many of the features the FFMLers were protesting the lack of over the years, and has gotten increasingly more stable (but not perfectly so, as the recent problems show), but along the way has also done stupid things like suddenly wiping out all NC-17 (or MA) rated fanfiction (simply because it was correctly marked as NC-17\MA rated, even though there were a lot of incorrectly marked NC-17 fics they ignored), all songfics, etc., and has never corrected its arbitrary rule-enforcement.
So, no, hoping for an alternative for a decade was NOT a "fib."

I am sorry, but that is the point -- DeviantArt ISN'T a substitute for fanfiction.net (and, heck, deviantart has problems, too, including the lack of a good fanfiction search engine). Neither are that 'plethora of other sites.' I am sorry if I am unsatisfied with a poor status quo and desire something better and more like the original fanfiction communities that I was a part of from 1996-2001, rather than more cookie-cutter style Fanfiction.net or Mediaminer clones, or sites like DeviantArt whose focus isn't fanfiction. It isn't that I absolutely hate fanfiction.net and don't want to ever go there again, it's that I have been in far, far better fanfiction communities that used to be about as big (relative to fanfiction\fandom inflation) as fanfiction.net, but with them having gone away for one reason or another I'm left with a shadow of what I used to have, and continue to hope that someday a real competitor comes along that is closer to what I used to have than what is out there now.
I didn't realize that one had to be happy with Fanfiction.net and believe it is the absolutely perfect site that could never be replaced in any way whatsoever in order to post on it.

I put your post into Babblefish, and translated it from 'Childish Hissy-fit' into 'English', and it seems to have some problems; apparently, you think you're justified to cry at one moment and call for a mass-migration from day-one of fanfiction.net, then the next roll your eyes at me for pointing out the faults in your claim.

I'm sorry, I'm not the one having a hissy-fit. And I sure as heck wasn't the one calling for a mass-migration from Fanfiction.net -- I merely said I was looking for an alternative to it. A good one, you know -- one that was better.
To make an analogy, it's like I was living in a nice house and had to move into an apartment, and cannot buy another house because there are none to buy. Because I want to move back into a house, you think I should leave the apartment I'm unsatisfied with to move into far worse apartments, or to stop saying I wish there was a house I could buy.
What's with all the personal attacks just because I think fanfiction.net's not entirely satisfactory?

Are you for real?
Your on a topic about the problems with ff.net and your defending them and bashing a reasonable poster?
I agree with everything desaix has said. Completely. FF.net is like hooking up my modem and dialing back to 1998. The service it offers to writers does the job, but it could be so much better. The internet has come soooo far. It's only a matter of time until a decent user-friendly Deviant Art-esque site pops up for writers. And not for just fanfic, but all kinds of writing. And when that happens, there will be a migration.
Anyone who is on ff.net appreciates that it's there, so don't feel like you need to hold the post of site defender. You've misinterpreted all of desaix's posts to blow your top.
One last thing, if you were acting this inflammatory about Hinata, people would be jumping all over you. So, since no one else has said anything, let me make it clear: KNOCK IT OFF! Your posts are offensive.

I actually agree with tricksie. You were too much! Desaix made reasonable posts but for some reason you were just picking on him for no reason at all.
