My guess is that Kishi killed Jiraiya with the purpose that Naruto grows up and becomes a stronger person. He needs his main protagonist to mature and although a long time ago he said that Naruto has to wait when it comes to his development, to this very day he has started focusing on his development. In other words even if he was a great character with potential Jiraiya's death was needed to further develop Naruto's character.

I was definitely sad to see Ero-Sennin pass away, but more than likely Kishimoto did it to develop Naruto's character like you said Gravenimage.

Yeah Naruto will write books in his spare time and carry on Jiraiya's legacy passing down to Konohamaru and if we're lucky Naruto's future son as well.
