I think a 12-year age difference with the gal being older is reason enough to disregard that possibility. LOL

That aside, what seems to be an issue for everyone is that there was no explanation for the couple. This confuses me because:

1. It's a shonen action series; romance is tertiary at best.

2. Kishimoto clearly has no knack for anything remotely romantic.

3. There is naturally going to be a lot not covered when you have a huge gap in time like that between 699 and 700.

4. Choji's a secondary character, so it's unreasonable to expect his story to be covered in any meaningful way. And Karui is even less than secondary. Yes, you could say the same for ShikaTema, but they have had the whole series to build up little moments of direct and meaningful interactions. When would Choji and Karui have had time between her introduction as an antagonist and them being in different divisions during the war? Also, people don't have to meet as teens to have a meaningful relationship.

So I'm sorry if I don't find the argument, "They came out of nowhere" a particularly justifiable one when it comes to deriding this couple. Really, where was any relationship for Choji going to come from but nowhere?

To be fair, he had a modicum of interaction with Ino to suggest that he really cares for her. Recall he was consoling her when she was crying over Sasuke being labled a traitor to the leaf. There are a few other scenes as well come to think of it.

All Konoha shinobi are supposed to care about their comrades and especially their teammates. Both he and Shikamaru came between her and Sasuke when he returned during the war, so do you think Shikamaru works for her, too? What about Ino's dream including Sai? You can argue it was shoehorned in, but it's believable, given the superficial, appearance-oriented aspects of her personality. Would it have been nice for Ino to have grown as a person enough to be with an Akimichi? Sure, but it seems Kishimoto believes gals can't mature past the age of 12, so too bad for Ino.

Ino's lack of growth in that regard aside, as an Akimichi and a nice guy, Choji would be concerned for her and Shikamaru--it's a part of what his clan does. They are Ino-Shika-Cho for a reason. I have never seen Ino as a viable love interest for either of her teammates because marriage between the three clans, especially with the heirs involved, would be problematic at best. It may have some emotional merit, but the practicalities of it make it unlikely at best.

Well, if the spoilers are right, we will get the explanation in the movie. According to it, Chouji basically fell in love with Karui's cooking. And Karui, having never had a guy compliment her before outside of her shinobi skills, starts taking an interest in him. If it's true, then I don't mind the pairing at all.

That would be lovely. I can hardly believe they'd be given the time!

Sorry, that spoiler was fake
The only couple that had time in the movie was NH
And the execution was like that of a D-grade fanfic. I mean, Naruto
thought Hinata loved him like he loved ramen... Lol this is OOC... Naruto is not like that, he has empathy, he would never disregard Hinata's feelings (that he already knew of) during 2 years, most likely he would address the issue

You're probably right. It's just that he did more for her than Sai ever did. I was thinking that might lead to something, but I guess not. The Ino-Shika-Cho trend could've continued (i.e  Chouji and Ino have two children) though I don't think it was necessary. I mean what exactly did them being a team contribute to the story. Ino hardly did anything, Chouji outgrew his usefulness after part one and Shikamaru has been stealing the spotlight throughout the entire manga (which I'm grateful for!).

Wait...did you watch the same war as I did? LOL

Overall, after the god-like Team 7, Team 10 was the best team during the war. They saved Darui's division from Kinkaku and were the logistics and communication for the army after HQ was destroyed. Also, they were the most successful team after 7 while battling the mini jubi. They did a lot as a team. When you take their individual and participation in individual clan achievements on top of it, they were even more accomplished.

It's one of the reasons I really dislike it when people blow off Ino as useless. She was pretty darned amazing during the war. She saved the army two or three times. I was surprised and glad Kishimoto bothered to do that for/with her.

Yeah, Kishi did a lot for Team 10 during the war. Shikamaru is the clear star, but unlike with Team Hinata, Kishi actually gave spotlight to them all. Choji was spotlighted during the war and got the butterfly mode upgrade. Ino was given numerous moments. Compare that to Kiba, Shino, Lee, and Tenten. All got pushed aside for the glory of the author's darling spotlight stealing Hinata-sama.

Choji x Karui makes NO sense since it was never explained. This is what I thought the movie would be about, but instead we got Hinata all the time. Basically, Kishi needed a new InoShikaCho for Part 3 and since they could not be with each other, Choji and Ino had to be with someone. Sai was Sasuke's replacement. Congrats to Sai. Karui means light. Choji is fat. There you go. Just like with Kiba and the cat girl, he went for a joke.

Seconded. I woulda been more than happy with Choji and Ino, since they got history and some development.

Nice rant, but I'm certain moneymoto didn't think of any of it. lol! He probably just put all characters in a lottery box, and had a draw with each of them.

Really? I can understand wanting a new InoShikaCho for Part 3, but why Karui? Why not a fellow clan member? Not everyone has to be paired up with other named characters

Exactly how I feel! I also think that a good pairing for Choji would have been Ino. :D Just give 'em twins or something!

they clearly wanted to set this up so there may be a younger gen of ninja based series.

The pairing was random because I cant fathom the reason how kishi even thought of them together.Did he use a lottery or something? I dont even recall them interacting even once in the manga..

I also wanted (a little) that choji be paired with ayame..

One more random thing kishi did..

He made Anko Mitarashi FAT! xD

lol...
