This movie won't flop. I can tell you that right now. There is SO much hype surrounding it, and, in addition to fans of the book, it's def gonna bring in the doesn't-like-reading Twilight crowd, easy.

From what I've heard though it's an erotic novel that female readers indulge in. I don't really see anything wrong with that as long as people don't take it too seriously.

I haven't even read the books so I can't judge.

I've never read the book and don't plan to, but to my understanding it's largely about dominance roleplay. Which, I don't see as being the same as abuse, since I would assume that if it was just a roleplay it would be consentual. But again, I know next to nothing about the book, perhaps it's more than what I was told.

Definitely could have done without the trailer being shown in the commercials during the Superbowl.

I think it was right at home there. This year's batch was awful from beginning to end.
Anyway, I think if I try extra hard I might work up the ability to care about this movie or worry about its success, but I'm too lazy to expend the effort.

Having read the first two books, I can agree that the relationship between Anna and Christian is extremely problematic. The inequality in power is troublesome, Christian is extremely controlling, and there is certainly an underlying theme of abuse.
However, I find the use of "sadistic sex" problematic. There is a good argument that the portrayal of BDSM in the book is awful. I agree. First off, the actual description of BDSM moments really miss a lot. Moreover, there's a recurring debate about how Christian is somehow emotionally and morally in the wrong for engaging in this type of sex. Anna needs to "fix him." That's bad. BDSM is perfectly fine when both parties are consenting and agree to practice it safely.

I probally would have never heard of this movie if not for all the rants I see about people that hate the book and are furious that they made an movie out of it. For what I understand, the male protagonist is violently obsessed with the female protagonist and is very possessive of her, and people are upset because this is shown as an nice thing or something. I would almost see this movie just to see what the fuss is all about, but I usually dislike this genres.

Early Reviews are in, and bottom line is, it's simply trying to sell out to its most hardcore fans and is intended that way. Not exactly a bad thing, but it's not exactly redeeming too.

I've read some quotes of the book, and that's enough for me. I mean, look at this. kittenin hell. Everyone who clicks on that link and comes back to tell me it isn't that harmful, is a misogynist.
Edit; This link is also helpful. Found it through facebook. :) Fifty shades of rape and abuse.

It isn't much better or worse than SS, but it isn't anything like it either. Both relationships are unhealthy, but that's the only legit comparison. I don't see any other similarities, and people only seem to be comparing this to SS to insult it. :/
