Theres another aspect as well to add. Which is Anime studio interference and preference. Pierot is well known for hinata fanboing to the point where they exaggerated Sakuras tsundere tendencies to quite frankly ridiculous degrees. While making Hinata this objectified  princess who adiored the MC from afar for all her lonely life. they never added any depth just expanded how often she showed up
 
Sakura meanwhile was made out to be this mad dog firecracker who went off at the drop of a hat or if Naruto so much as farted in her general direction in a manner she found offensive which was EVERY time. And when she wasnt being that she was basically being a doormat for ""Sasuke-kun"" which meant she simped for him at every opportuinity
 
this led to the character seeming to be a split personality where one minute shes about to use Narutos skull to crack the world open and the next shes about to fall into depressed ruin because Sasuke spit on her toes
 
this inconsistency of characterization by the anime studio basically left a lot of sour taste in peoples mouths and left her character tarnished in many ways worse then other shonen heroines. Sakura if you follow the manga barely ever hit Naruto the comedic aspect was never pushed in the story beyond 2-3 times where it was used

Here, here! And that is what makes me most mad is that SP had to butt in so much for no damn good reasons other than pettiness.

Well part of it is that the Japanese know the manga is the actual story while the anime is a 20 minute ad. While American anime fans may claim to understand that...or say they do. They really just go with whatever they watch on tv, says over what they read because they don't really read, and don't have a good enough reading comprehension to understand what they read anyways.

 

But explaining why the anime didn't bother the Japanese that much; it has to do what they find funny. From what I understand, the two most well known types of humor the Japanese find funny are puns, and physical comedy. Physical comedy is what's important as well as why Tsundere became so popular in the 90's in shounen. Put it simply, the Japanese find it funny to have the main character get comically beaten up by his love interest. They find it funny if after a battle where the hero defeats a god in mortal combat without ever showing a hint of  fear, he is running away in absolute mortal terror because he just remembered that  he had forgotten he had a date with his girl... Wait just remembered they call it the manzai, Boke and Tsukkomi routine, the straight guy and the wise guy. The wise/idiot/funny guy does something funny then the straight man tells them to cut it out normally by hitting them making the scene even funnier to the Japanese.

 

 

 

American action heroes have to be badass 100% of the time never showing weakness always serious, and if they don't their character has been ruined. In Japan, for shounen manga normally the main character is goofy most of the time and only serious when the situation calls for it*. If they try to be serious 100% they are normally the butt of jokes during the downtime, and one of the favorite ways to say it was downtime was for the heroine to beat up the hero.

 

So, they didn't mind Sakura hitting Naruto too much in the anime, because they found it funny. Also helps that the Sasuke bit went away during most of shippuden. (Again, this is another difference between US and Japan; the US saw only part one, Japan saw both.) Which meant most of the downtime was Sakura managing Naruto like a standard heroine for them. 

 

* Look at what just happened this week with Luffy with Fifth Gear; his true power is that he is goofy. Yet, I know people that genuinely think for every fight that this time Luffy is going to go all out to kill his opponent, cut off their head, and drink their blood or something like that. In order to show how tough & badass he is and he not going to take any form of disrespect from his crew anymore.
