After some thought on the matter, animated gifs will remain in signatures. The single image rule will cut down on the amount of images per page, and it will also be easier for us mods to check on the sizes of gifs.
I will do some research into this and decide on what is an acceptable file size for animated gifs. The trouble is that a lot of animations are clips of movies/TV, which obviously means a large file size.
