I don't think that's what Shanks intended for it to be when he gave it to Luffy.

Usopp is the only Straw Hat to get in them. And Nami was the one forcing him, too.

I'm teasing.. Usopp and Nami make the best friendship in One Piece, though.

 

And @Leo, how was I caught? I proved that the hat didn't compare to encounters Nami has had with other people.

I'm not, what it does symbolize between the two however is their strong emotional attachment the two have as a pair, especially considering that Luffy is Nami's emotional anchor. Deep emotional connection doesn't imply love, but it is the start. Much like the hat was the start of Luffy's journey, so too could it symbolize the start of them.

Blame FY on that btw, the man is a pairing machine. Can't go two seconds without mentioning babies. I'm still down to talk about the chapter, but no one has said anything lately XD

Usopp and Nami's friendship doesn't even come close to being the best friendship in the series. Luffy/Zoro, Luffy/Nami, Luffy/Jinbe, Rayleigh/Roger, Luffy/Shanks, Luffy/Law all easily eclipse Usopp and Nami's in terms of friendship. Easily.

I don't think so. I think Luffy/Zoro, Luffy/Nami, Luffy/Jinbe, and Luffy/Sanji are much more potent than Luffy/Usopp in terms of friendship. Usopp lost that game when he admitted to throwing away Luffy's friendship for the sake of a ship he knew was on its last run, for the reason that it was a gift from Kaya. He can never be as close to Luffy because of that, whereas Zoro, Sanji, and Jinbe were willing to pay the ultimate price for Luffy, and Nami is the strongest emotional connection to Luffy.

Well we see friendship differently for anime. I'm not saying who cares more for each other, or who has been around one another longer. I rate friendships in anime based on how well they are together. This means things like humor, and knowing what makes the other tick. Also how much they understand one enough in a way they can compare themselves to them, or even just comfort the other through their problems. For me, that's Nami and Usopp. They're the only non-monsters on the ship from what Nami said, and she's right. Even Chopper whose fear of danger is almost as bad as Usopp and Nami can turn into what he himself considers to be a monster.

 

I'm obviously not saying Usopp and Nami care about each other more than Luffy cares about Shanks, or more than Rayleigh cares about Roger. And Luffy's friendship with Jinbei and Law is not higher than his care for the nakama on his crew. Maybe Luffy will have the same kind of feeling with Jinbei as he does for all his crew members, because he's joining the crew anyway, but that feeling isn't going beyond. As for Law, he's a nakama, but he isn't a crew member. 

 

And no AHK, it may seem nice to think or say it because it backs up you shipping LuNa, but Luffy doesn't consider his connection with Nami more emotionally strong... He met Robin a few days prior, and had no problem targeting the world government to get her back on his crew. The dude fought until he was paralyzed with blood all over the place. All to get back Robin. He had just met Chopper who was nothing more than a new friend to him, and jumped in front of an explosion to stop someone from destroying Chopper's flag. I'm not saying he won't end up with Nami and loving her emotionally the most, but as for now, he doesn't do anything to just Nami that means he loves her on a different level of emotion. If anyone, he is most attached to Zoro, as he's his first mate. And before you mention "but he was crushed when she was sick... he climbed that mountain for her... so sweet," don't act like he wouldn't do the same if that was Vivi (saying Vivi because she was the only other girl on the ship at the time).

i would say that luffy/zoro have the best friendship in the series. their friendship has had some bumps along the way, but no other friendship comes close to theirs in my opinion. luffy and zoro have a better relationship imo. at least zoro never seriously disrespected his captain and challenged him to a duel that was pointless to being with.

Ok, I judge on the same things. Nami and Luffy are hilarious together, they know how each other works, and they understand each other. The biggest difference is that Luffy doesn't have to even say any comforting words to help Nami now, he just has to be. It doens't matter that they're not "monsters and in reality, it never did. She was always able to draw comfort from Luffy. This shouldn't even be a debate, Nami drawing comfort from Usopp pales in comparison to what she draws from Luffy, and that's not even a pairing thing. It's literally not even close to debatable and ridiculous that you suggest otherwise, and assert that I'm not considering all things involved in a friendship. I am, and Usopp/Nami's friendship isn't close to other friendships in the series.
 
Luffy doesn't distinguish from crew and friends, they're all his friends. He's better friends with Jinbe than he ever was with Usopp, seeing as how what they went through and the level of respect that they have between each other was more than what Usopp did with Nami. Law is just the same, Luffy and Law have a ton of respect for each other, and they're friends as well. Or did you forget that Law was willing to die with Luffy only a short while ago. Usopp cares so much about Luffy that his initial reaction to Trebol was to turn his back on Luffy and the crew and run away? Sure that's part of Usopp's character, he's a massive coward, but to run away so easily in the face of an enemy when you spent two years training yourself to do the opposite in order to protect your friends is a massive slap in the face to each and every one of the people he calls his friends.
 
First, I wasn't bringing any LuNa in to it. Secondly, it doesn't matter what he's considered. A few months ago, I didn't consider that you existed, yet that doesn't mean you don't. He is Nami's anchor emotionally, that is a fact. We've seen this multiple times. Interestingly enough, for all of your rambling about Robin and Chopper, he did that with Nami too. Or did you forget? He chased her back to her village to fight a huge threat (at the time) with little regard for what was actually happening, and zero care for anything other than Nami, and it was there that he became her anchor Your list of all the other people Luffy has helped doesn't detract from the iron-clad, established fact that Luffy is Nami's solace, and Luffy knows how much he needs her.
 
So like it or not, LuNa or not, they are the two on the crew that are the most emotionally adjoined, right there with Luffy and Zoro. In terms of friendship, it's a toss up between Luffy/Zoro and Luffy/Nami.

... No. He doesn't consider Nami above his other nakama crewmates. And I know he helped Nami. I was listing other names to compare them to her. Saying why helping her was nothing more emotional than what he did for his other nakama.

I brought up LuNa as its the obvious reason why you are saying he cares more for Nami. Like even I can admit when I show favortism. I think Mccourty from the Patriots is the best safety in the league, but that's because he's from New England, and there are like 5 good candidates for best safety in the league.

In this case, you adore Luffy with Nami, so by default you'll want their connection to be stronger. But obviously he cares for her as much as Robin. Emotionally and friendly. You can't accept that because you know Luffy isn't getting with Robin either, and if that's all he feels for female crewmembers... well then, LuNa just has no foreshadowing of happening other than Luffy giving her his hat twice. But Sanji holding her in a wedding gown is more foreshadowing than that. And even I can admit Sanji has almost no chance of ending up with Nami. This is One Piece after all.

Because it was, The hat is Luffy's most valuable treasure, it held a level of trust and acceptance from Luffy if he willingly handed it over to anyone and so far Nami has been the only one who Luffy has willingly handed to wear, not once but twice. So fans who have been with the series for a while, started seeing it as a clue to the two ending up together. Ofcourse after the skypea arc Oda pretty much let go of all romance in the manga, and concentrated on the story alone.

 

I'm still a LuNa fan because of the remnants of the earlier chapters, it's been non existant since then, unless we call Luffy saving a princess every arc potential romantic pairings, in which case, Luffy has got himself a harem or royalty.

 

I can't take Sanji's romantic feelings serious because he chases every woman in the manga, but if i'm honest Sanji and Nami have had more screentime together than Nami and Luffy, but then again I don't think Luffy has had enough downtime with his crew for over five years now.
