Shyamalan lines up his cast for 'The Last Airbender'

M. Night Shyamalan has found the cast for The Last Airbender, his upcoming live-action film based on the popular anime-inspired Nickelodeon series. The youthful group is mostly filled with unknowns who are likely to be household names by the time Paramount opens the first in its potential three-film franchise in July 2010. After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender's 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight's Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang's pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara. Genial singer Jesse McCartney, meanwhile, is negotiating to play against type in the role of the Fire Nation's evil prince Zuko.

That being said, I actually think that the 'Katara and Sokka' actors look like the parts ^^

Yeah, the Katara and Sokka casting doesn't bother me. But Jesse McCartney? Seriously? WTF, M. Night?

Hmm, for some reason, I never thought it easy to adjust from anime to real-life. They all look pretty ridiculous to me, but I think it's only because I'm just too used to the anime and not because I'm opposed to the actors. Of course, it all comes down to the acting and the effects. Well, at least Aang is a karate dude

But see, that doesn't make much sense either. Airbending is based on Ba Gua, not Karate.


I should've sent in my resume and tried for Zuko. I look enough like him and I actually know Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, which is what Firebending is based on.

@shaunama: um sure, but doncha think that the movie industry has embraced different cultures in their movies by now? look at Twilight-- the casting fit the background of the characters, for example, what's his name, Jacob. Wasn't the actor's character Indian-American? They chose the right actor for the part, he looked it.

and this... this just annoys the hell out of me. and frustrates me. and just kills the joy of ever being excited about this movie-- M. Night had a chance to make somethin HUGE out of the film, and he blows it by getting characters that don't even LOOK the part ):

and okay, sure Jackson R's face can adapt to Sokka's many different facial expressions, but the whole problem i have is that they're white.

it doesn't make sense.

for Zuko? okay sure, that makes sense, considering the Fire Nation can be based straight off Chinese people and have pale skin complexions. and hell even Toph could pass.

but Sokka and Katara? They come from Eskimo origin-- the Water Tribe are the darkest-skinned people in the whole show. for all i know they turned down so many good people for the roles. it's a slap in the face of effort. i mean seriously. how hard is it to play a fiery-tempered and caring 14 year old and a goofy, serious-in-situation 15 year old? FAWK i should've tanned up and auditioned for Katara. 3:<

also, if the casting is confirmed then they're gonna wast a crapload of time and energy on make-up. >w> i bet it's STILL gonna look bad

You could still give it a chance ya know, krisk. Who knows, for some strange crazy unbelievable reason the movie might actually be good regardless of how the actors don't look the part, or it could be an epic fail. Either way, we can moan and groan about how the movie was poorly conducted (or well done) or.... just base everything off of how the actors don't look like the characters after the movie is out...
