They usually mistake or tease on purpose the relationship, whether it's true or not. Seriously, I always hear:

"You and your boyfriend won't get in my way!"
"Tell your boyfriend to shut up!"
"Now she's bring her boyfriend to stop me!"
"Ok, we'll save your boyfriend..."
"Your girlfriend is trying to ruin the party."
"We'll do it at all cost. Even if it's for your boyfriend."
"Oh my god! He's back! And he brought his girlfriend!"
"Your girlfriend is going to rot!"

And the responses always go:

"Boyfriend?!"
"Girlfriend?!"
"She's not my boyfriend!"
"I'm not his girlfriend!"
"We're just rivals!"
"We're just friends!"

There's more but yes, this is common.

Didn't Ino say this to Sakura when Naruto was shouting he would beat everyone in the Chuunin exam? Or was it just filler?

You know, I don't even know this one. Hell, it took James to tell me that the chapter cover of 437 have Sakura walking with Naruto.

Yeah it was filler.

 

In the manga she just ames a comment that Naruto is acting idiotic while Sakura agrees.

 

In the anime (english dub atleast) Ino tells Sakura to get her boyfriend to shut up and this angers her.

 

 

So mangakas use the same way to make their couple canon

 

Yeah and Haru and Elie had even less of a chance to happen because not only were Elie's feelings for Haru also kept under wraps (yet blindingly obvious) and she had a slight school girl crush on Musica and Sieghart. HAru and Elie also had the "star crossed lovers" trope going against them. Even Haru's dad said in his mind "sorry there's no way you two can be together its just not possible"

I just read a KibaIno fanfic. It was actually really funny! I ship those two now.   I think they could be a really hot couple! NaruIno... eh, I could kinda see it, I guess. It's kinda hard for me to see Naruto with any other girl besides Sakura because he has always had eyes only for her. IDK why I can ship Sakura with other people though... lol.
