Sure, but if he's saying that he has been doing his best, I don't see why the hell he wouldn't have made the connection that Sakura is like Kushina by now. If he's saying that he's been doing his best at trying to look for someone like his mother, why wouldn't it be Sakura when that is the only girl he has ever pursued? He would be lying to his dad if he didn't make the connection by now.

yup and if it was hinata he would of said her name but he didn't cuz he still loves sakura and is still trying his best to win her heart plus sakura is the hard to get type of a girl hinata isn't cuz she already confessed but he never return her feelings cuz he see's hinata as a friend and nothing more

Simple he was being honest with his father......Minato asked if Sakura was his girlfriend to which Naruto said she sort of was. He loves Sakura and he was being honest about that,  she doesn't have to resemble Kushina for him to love her.

Right after that he said that not everything has been going the way his mother told him, so he didn't really change the subject if he's saying that he's doing his best. The MS translation even says that he's been doing his best to do everything.

Our people already translated that part of Japanese. He changed the subject because he's not secure about it. "Doing his best" is in general.

I took Naruto's "not everything is going as Mom said" as a general statement. Most likely the girl comment and maybe his studies were thrown in that line. 

 

If Naruto liked Hinata, he would've said he found a girl as great as his mother. He would have no reason to hold that back. Hinata loves him, he likes her so might as well say it. Unlike with Sakura, where it's circumstantial and complicated. Sakura was in the area, Naruto doesn't know if she likes him, Naruto thinks she loves Sasuke, Naruto hasn't confessed, all of these are valid motivations as to why he didn't say her name. Him saying "I'm trying my best" negates the idea he chose a girl that isn't like his mother because it indicates he wants to follow all of it.

 

I considered the idea Naruto isn't sure about a girl or is confused, but that doesn't particularly make sense because he's never shown this beforehand. And in 631, joke or not, he did call Sakura his girlfriend and confirmed he still liked her with Hinata around. There wasn't conflict at all, why now in the same day?

 

I'll admit I'm annoyed a little Kishimoto had to be so unspecific again. It just felt like a transparent attempt to be ambiguous on Naruto's feelings just to throw a bone at the fans when the bomb 631 dropped made that pointless enough.

Hinata didn't even cross Naruto's mind when he was saying not everything is going the way Kushina said, maybe the times when he noticed Sakura's feelings for Sasuke, maybe the fact he has no one, but not Hinata... If Hinata were actually in every moment her fans think she is, she would be one of the main characters. Naruto didn't need a thought panel of Sakura because she was standing right in front of him, but what makes them think Hinata crossed his mind? She may be a stalker but it's not like her soul is everywhere.

HINATA SAMA IS THE ULTIMATE. SHE IS SECRETLY PRESENT FOR NARUTO EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. Lol.

I dunno, people just tend to be biased. Ino is definitely one of my favorites, up there with Sakura, but you don't see me saying OMG SHE IS THERE EVEN WHEN SHE IS IN THE INFINITE TYUKSOMI (or however you spell it, it's just that moon thing). She's SIDE character, not the person the manga is named after.

So... I suppose that only someone can afford that for her and that one is Naruto. Sasuke can't love her the way Naruto loves her. It's like saying you like ketch-up on your fries but don't mind mustard over them either!
