There was shipping wars in AtLA??? There was a Zutara fandom?! Why? Didn't Zuko love some other Fire-nation girl? And he ended up with her right? Crazy fans. Shippers sometimes completely lose common-sense and judgement skills that God has given to them. *sighs*
The avatar last airbender shipping wars were among the shortest but also bloodiest shipping wars in recent years, the deal with Zutara was that many thought it would occur, be in truth, even a ship like SS had a better chance because well Zutara they both began as foes, SS they both began as comrades, but yeah, in the case of Zutara, this ship was just composed of among one of the most insistent, evidence ignoring, evidence fabricating, etc ships that could ever exist in any fandom.
When Zuko didn't go good at the end of part 2, this was the point of no return, fans continued to hope this would occur, but by that point when this season ended in 2006, it was too far too late. Because up to that point, in season 1, zuko was an enemy and spent his time hunting them. In season 2 he was an anti-hero going among himself and with his uncle, but the limited contact they had was only so slightly positive near the end in the prison, it all blew out in their faces when zuko went evil again and then had to spend another half season learning how he lost himself in this event. Finally by season 3, Zuko and katara made up, in episode 15, but guess what, by the time this happened, Aang and Katara had already gotten plenty of moments and were otherwise set, Zuko himself had a lot of time with Mai, even then there were only 5 episodes left in the series, the parody episode, the ember island players and then the 4 part finale. And fans of Zutara STILL expected and believed it would come!
But oh no, this ship is notable because even the creators themselves tried it, didn't like the end result in concept, and came to hate it, ultimately in a comic-con after the finale, they did the equivalent of sinking their ship to nothing but a smoldering ruin with a fanart parody event and making Aang and Katara have children. Now there are fans of this ship 6 years later still beliving it can happen when Zuko and Katara are older than 80?.......
Yeah thats just enough, as anyone can ship what they want, thats not bad, but for those still believing that it could come or those arguing why it should occur, they don't understand how a story works, the sheer fact Zuko and katara hardly interacted is one thing, the other being that it was Aang and katara along with zuko and mai interaction that occurred more.
I didn't take part in this war, it was otherwise too obvious to know the end result, but the way this war turned out, I think its a good analogy to many of the similar fans in the NH and SS fandom who should realize, that in some similar aspects, their ship may not go canon just because of popularity or because they want it too, even for deals of concepts, if NH or SS was an originally planned pairing, but didn't go through in the end, thats why it was a concept, things are just made in times long before a point in the story comes and well if kishi and his team toyed with it and didn't like the result of NH and/or SS, this is very much the same case, its story plots like this that are just concepts, they could have been used but were not, and I bet there are plenty of story concepts kishi and his team had but never brought out.
As bad as the naruto pairing wars have got, you will start to see some similar stuff the further this stuff goes on and well with the recent event of the 3rd girl like kushina event, this has sent NH and SS fans into overdrive because with it hinting Sakura currently, as she is the only girl to fit kushinas "mold" given kushinas backstory from herself and Minato meeting Sakura, well that's enough evidence for where things may go even though other fans may not like it.
The avatar pairing wars were devastating though mainly because of how short and violent they were, as much as people frown upon the naruto ones, this was much worse and its only continued due to the new series, "Avatar pairing war 2." But this war was bad because even years after their defeat, Zutara fans continue to say why theirs should have gone canon despite the fact, it made no freaking sense in the end at that point. This is what will happen in the naruto war as well.
