Why would it be the last movie in the first place? Fairy Tail still has a looooong way to go & the writer doesn't plan it either (that's how it seems to me at least)

New chapter was pretty much exactly how I expected it to be. It's a shame really because on it's own it's a really good chapter, but because it follows the same old formula that's been used in the manga multiple times, it just doesn't have the same level of excitement anymore. It's like thos old cartoons, where every episode, the villain has a plan, the hero tries to stop villain, it looks like the villian will win, starts to monologue and hero somehow wins, and the same formula repeats itself everyweek.

Agreed. I actually found the Tartaros arc fights to be of much better quality, mainly due to how much difficulty the villains posed compared to past arcs. That, and a couple of whammies here and there in between those fights worked too. Particularly the Spirit King summoning and DF!Wendy. Heck, I find Mard Geer to be even more of a threat than the Spriggans.

The fight itself was nowhere near as bad as Erza's fights. The rune trick itself was pretty good, and pretty creative at that (Evergreen herself also knows how to use some runes, so Laxus learning them is not out of the question.) The problem is a few of the details Mashima didn't bother going through.

For example, are Freed's runes made up of MBPs? It was implied, but not outright confirmed. The real disappointment in the chapter is the whole red lightning thingie. Mashima could've been more creative by having Laxus use electromagnetism instead. But nope.

I agree, the chapter wasn't bad, but the whole red lighting aspect made me scratch my head going like that came out of left feild, but it's not as bad as what Erza's fights have turned out.

Red lightning is more of a Shounen trope and if you don't accept that, then problems will ensue. The reason why I'm more forgiving on that is because timeskip happened. Laxus wasn't his best when fighting, so with that cancellation, it can implied that now he's not held back, he can try to do that technique. Have this part have no time skip plot and have him saying something "I have nothin else to do!" then I can forgive.

I like the idea, there was just no foreshadowing or explanation for it is all. Red lightning is cool it's just how did Laxus get it? Did he train for it? was it associated with Yuri? all questions, no answers. Nowhere near as Erza's fights as of late for sure but still pretty  a@$-pully overall.

Asspull would have been Laxus out of luck or no power and somehow obtain that. This is more of "I'm back from a year, look at how much stronger I gotten." I mean if you truly think that attack on Ajeel is all you got, then you're not reading it right and for Shounn like this level, that's saying something. I don't need to defend this one because really, I'm not like "FT #1!!" but honestly, this is really easy. I guess "FT Lol" goes so far without actually thinking otherwise. Hell, I could bring OP into this but I won't. The point is you're overreaching.

But oh well. To each of their own.

Well try to explain all attacks in general after time skip. This is based off One Piece style, meaning you won't get much of explanation, rather just know they can do it. Not saying that all of it will be like that but this is an exception. Not like he pulled a technique that is said to be impossible or something like how Natsu somehow could eat lightning when he flopped the first time.

I think if Mashima was given more pages to work with, he would've expanded Laxus' flashback a bit more by having Mavis teach him Yuri's magic.
