I would agree in regards to the west. But as for Japan, I'm not so sure. Wasn't Sakura(and by extension NS) more popular in Japan than in other countries?

Sakura and NS is well liked in JP. But even so in JP her popularity was decreasing since the War Arc. She doesn't have a large hate base compared to the West, but she's not too popular. I know Hinata has a hate base in JP; they call her Hina-cow, lol. 

 

Anyway, Agree. I don't know how she managed to have a loyal, yet hardheaded fan base. You can't go in any forum or Naruto site, except here and Tumblr, and have a decent conversation without pro Hinata rants. Her sudden popularity also is the reason why The Last exist. She's too overrated.

Of Course their is a growing hate base for Sakura in Japan. They hate what she has become since the ending. As for Hinata pity as well as sexual and insert fantasies are the reasons she is overly popular in the west.

I'm not sure if there is a person on this site who will disagree with this statement...For someone who does so little, she's so beloved.

But, for the sake of playing devil's advocate I would Argue SASUKE is the most overrated character in the series, Hinata following him at 2nd. 

At the end of the day, for a Manga called "Naruto" the whole damn thing seemed to center around someone called "Sasuke."

I will put Hinata as number 1 while sasuke number 2, because she's a side character and sasuke a main character.
She's a side character who has a dedicate fanbase to the point she got her own movie.
Sasuke problem is he overshadow the protagonist and title character to the point changing this manga with his name is valid.

He's the only character i have ever seen who can treat EVERYONE around him like kitten--and do it  purpose, with as much venom as he can manage and yet somehow mass buttloads of the fandom still act like he's the best thing since vaccination's got invented. 

Hinata doesn't particularly do anything bad, nor does she do anything good she just vaguely exists.

Well that's the point, Hinata is irrelevant to the plot but her popularity is what make her the most overrated character in naruto than sasuke who is truly relevant to the plot.
Sasuke is kishi most favorite character, that's why he can do what he do.

Hinata is easy for most people to like because she doesn't particularly DO anything one way or another, she has little personality beyond; "NardoNardoNardo." you can superimpose anything you like onto her as long as it fits those perimeters.

Sasuke on the other hand has a fully fleshed out personality and modus operandi ( and they involve being a complete ass about everything.) and can literally do whatever he likes in canon and still get away with it, 

Its easy to be liked when you never get a chance to actually make screw ups. But Sasuke has had so much time and made so much trouble and just been an over all kitten but its cool because its Sasuke and he's some precious snowflake. 

He's not a  Good friend or even an astoundingly good person ( or even a mediocre good person after part 1)  but everyone around him is like falling all over themselves, their pride, honor, safety and happiness for him. he essentially does EVERYTHING wrong, but gets all the love.

Hinata basically does nothing one way or the other and gets a fair amount of it, but to me seeing someone so blatantly horrible be so rewarded makes him the most over rated character i have come across as of yet.

Idk what she did to deserve such a praise, even Kishimoto was clueless about that

Rocci said it best, really. I never such an overrated character until here. I mean I have seen more bu the thing is, they back it up. Hinata...What did she do to back it up?

Statement: One of the main problems of female characters is the fact they never left a strong positive impression, ending with a whimper or something that the negative outweigh the positive such as Sakura's seal power-up to begging, Tsunade's girl power segment against Madara to lose badly, and so on.
