I HAVE ARRIVED.
I'll admit, this feels like a football game that we were winning by a ton of points and then suddenly the other team score 7 touchdowns in a row and is currently winning. Seems that way. At least at first it did. Then you kind of re-read the chapter, re-evaluate and say, "Oh, this can be interpreted in multiple ways, but I really think this chapter's about development!"
Another confession of mine: yes, I did sort of flip when I read it the first run through, and made the HUGE mistake of exploring the Tumblr tags. Yeah, biggest mistake of the night so far. Anywho.
As far as Hinata goes, I think people are right to assume that the Rookies' character development will come to a close in the order of which they spoke. Well, not exactly in order, but in similar fashion, with Sakura being the last person to do something. Hinata's development throughout the story has revolved around Naruto, but the results of that development haven't really shown-- at least until now. Strength wise we've seen some development, but until now, we haven't been able to see just how her development could be of significant relevance to the plot. Piece by piece, this is what happened:
- Neji dies
- Naruto loses hope in himself and his ninja way because Obito calls him out on not being able to protect his friends
- Hinata reminds him of who he is, what he's taught everyone, and why the alliance is even fighting a seemingly impossible battle
- Kurama backs this up and reminds Naruto that his parents died believing in him
I understand that the N/S half of the fandom is upset because maybe a portion of us feels like it should have been Sakura to give Naruto a reality check. But if we think about it (and I know everyone's been saying this all night long, but I want to make sure this point hits home!) this is what Hinata wanted. She wanted to be by Naruto's side. She wanted to walk with him, hold his hand- she did. Does this really mean it has to be romantic? At first it seemed like it, and hey, for all we know this could be what Kishi had in mind all along and just strung us along for the Trollocoaster. But the people freaking out and jumping ship, and the N/H fans declaring their ship canon are forgetting a few important things.
- N/S has been developing since the beginning. Its development, in my opinion, skyrocketed in Part II and then slowed a bit, but it's been there constantly.
- Naruto is the main character, and as far as we've seen, his feelings for Sakura haven't changed unless during the war he decided Hinata had his heart.
- We've seen in previous chapters how Sakura reacts to Naruto/Hinata interaction. As someone mentioned before, it seems almost like a forced hand. But it makes sense-- every time there's a seemingly victory-worthy N/H moment, and even more significant and blatantly romantic N/S moment happens. Sort of like an evolutionary Red Queen effect, where one one-ups the other (until one ship becomes canon or not canon of course).
- I don't think this is a big deal, but neither character blushed during the entire interaction (and if Hinata did, I didn't notice it).
I'll admit that N/H fans did have something to be happy about this chapter. To be quite honest, almost any shipper is happy if their two characters interact whether the moment is romantic or not; the relationship and the bond between the two characters is a primary reason why people even ship in the first place, even if it isn't always romantic. So yes, N/H fans rejoice. Your characters interacted and it had pivotal significance to the story.
However, I will say it's not over until a ship is explicitly, and not implicitly, seen as canon. And when I say explicitly...

(just kidding!). Anyone thinking of abandoning ship--
do not give up hope because of a little Hinata development!!!
REMEMBER:
And that's what I think about this. Now off to have OTP feels
