Personally speaking, I felt this wasn't a very good chapter. If Mashima wanted to write the 400-year flashback, it should've been right after Mavis' story. It would've made more sense narrative-wise since the pacing at the time was just right for a flashback arc. I don't know about you guys, but I am scared that this is going to fall apart like Nardo did. I honestly can't see where Mashima's going with this.

On the other hand though, Mashima has been notorious for throwing massive curveballs at us. So we'll see.

On another note, Layla's name comes up again... I really hope we'll find out what the heck is up with her and how Lucy will play into this.

Here's an ironic thought too: What if NaLu was planned out by Zeref and Layla? Lucy, who, for most of her life had been controlled by her father and tried escape from his grasp, ironically ends up playing into Zeref and Layla's plans, and that her meeting with Natsu was pre-destined.

Thought it was a cool chapter. Loved how Zeref was smiling during the fight, like he was proud of Natsu. Calling it now, Lucy is a reincarnation of Anna, and Anna was Natsu's first love. She died and Natsu flipped kitten and Zeref, Mavis, and Layla had to seal half his soul in the book. Boom.

We already got Mavis' backstory. I don't see how her sealing the E.N.D. half of Natsu would fit in the timeline. Layla "died" in X777. On July 7th of that year the dragons sealed themselves into their children. CS magic can be used for time-travel. Seeing how Layla was mentioned once again means it's even more likely that she was the one who brought the DS to the future. But where would Mavis fit in the timeline? She lived over a century ago, and Mard Geer states that it has been over 400 years since E.N.D. went into slumber (see last week's episode).

That means E.N.D's sealing took place over 400 years ago. Layla's role was to bring the DS to the future, it may have just so happened she was a reincarnation of Anna. But she was greatly weakened from using the time-travel spell. Zeref initially thinks she's "the one" for Natsu, but she believed otherwise and introduced him to her daughter. Zeref used a memory-wiping spell on Lucy per Layla's request, and why her memory from 7 years ago is fuzzy.

As for who sealed E.N.D, I think it was Zeref and Igneel. Remember that Igneel fought him before, so I'd guess that Igneel did the fighting while Zeref prepared the sealing.

That said, I definitely agree that Anna is likely Natsu's first love.

As of right now, the direction the story Mashima is taking is questionable. If Natsu loses, what was the point of this new-fangled powerup?, if Natsu wins, then what was the hype for this "war" for?

Also, Mashima tends to have something big happen in the X00 chapters or so, and we have about 30 chapters to go until the big 500. So whatever it is, I hope that what he's planning upwards to that chapter will be worth it.

I agree. It is rather strange but I am curious. This has to play well carefully. Though I did joke that the series got cancelled since taking out the main villain in a very rushed manner is always the solution. Regardless, we don't really know what's going on with Zeref like being taken out or not.

I agree. It is rather strange but I am curious. This has to play well carefully. There will still be Acnologia left as villain , I guess . I honestly do not think Zeref will die , maybe the god the cursed him will intervene .

 

If Zeref does die , this would be the one thing he wanted  since he became immortal , so I guess it would make sense from that point of view . It would be kind of anticlimactic though , especially after the set up chapter with his meeting  with Acnologia .
