Whoa chapter 196 was intense, and his nickname finally makes sense, it's amazing to to see how this flashback compares to Minato's flashback. Both fathers were talked about being geniuses, yet iafter Minato's flashback many fans mocked him, failing to see the supposed genius he was, as was largely a three trick pony, Rasengan, that he adapted from Bijuu, the Seals he learnt from Jiraiya and Kushina and his Flying Thunder God technique he copied off the second Hokage, he looked below par when compared to the other Hokages. Yet here we see Jouchirou and he looks like a real genius at a whole another level, no one else seems to come close to him, to a point that his hard work and dedication is overlooked by everyone else because he is so much better than everyone.

 

I just realised, this chapter likely means Azami was trying to turn Erina into a female version of Asura Jouchirou, It does make you wonder about Azami's motives is he trying to have a conformed standard so no other chef becomes disillusioned like Jouchirou, or is he continuing the work he felt Jouchirou left behind? Or did Jouchirou give him such a thrashing that he hardened up and became a by product of Jouchirou's rage...either way it is looking more and more like Azami is a product of Jouchirou's actions. This likely means after this arc is over, Azami will be a new man who will be forgiven for his deeds and looking very much like he'll be the Orichimaru of the series.

So Jouchirou bottled it? The expectations of those around him got too much for him and he ran away?

 

Which makes sense, and might even explain why Azami wants to get rid o the old competitive nature so nobody has to suffer from the expectations of other forced on them...but it's also that competition that made Azami the chef he is today, without Jouchirou pushing him he may have still managed the first seat, but he wouldn't be at the same level.

 

I wonder if that's why Jouchirou tended to travel so much over the years and have his random bouts of shutting shop and going off to work for some restaurant around the world? Maybe that's why he changed his name as well, a part of him is still running away.

At the same time, the Elite 10 have administrative powers... I'm not really ok if an Elite 10 member simply ignores his or her responsiblities. Being an Elite 10 member is more than just a title that shows the class rank. They are actively involved in the planning and logistics of the school activities... I've always wondered how lazy ass main characters like Soma can deal with administrative responsibilities (look at Naruto becoming Hokage... he seems so unhappy). I feel like he doesn't know what he himself gets into. In here, it seems to be COMPLETELY ok to shift these tasks aside to the other members, lol.

Seriousrly though, the skill level b/w Jouichirou and Gin in High School was rather shocking.

So hes pretty much beaten like hes tired living to everyone expectations, hes pretty much done, and i'm sure we gonna see how he meets souma's mom, and finally we gotta know the reason behind the word that cooking for the one you love thing from first chapter. No wonder why hes got small shop, ... i mean his that famous and genius he could own a hotel / luxurious fine dining restaurant.

Jouichirou admitted though he doesn't know his parents. Not sure about siblings though. However Rindou could just be a girl that is exactly like him through sheer coincidence

I can see that, the personality and even the hair, both red heads, only Rindou's is brighter, but that's not surprising we often see the female relative get brighter hair than the male relative. I also think the eyes are the same amber...plus the dorm mistress called him the Stray Cat and Rindou looks very much like a feline herself.

 

Not sure I believe it, but I can see the similarities.

You know this really doesn't tell us why Azami turned into a douche, does he think if nobody is special anymore nobody will be put under the type of pressure Saiba was put under? you got the feeling that maybe he didn't leave under the right circumstances last chapter but this week it feels like it was for his own sanity's sake.

They explained it before. He idol worship Saiba, and fell in love with his Asura style of cook off. And he blames Saiba leaving the school on their methods instead of the stress everyone was putting on him. So he resolved to change the culinary world into what he believe what Saiba-senpai would have turn it into if not for the school stabbing him in the back.

So far we've seen nothing that would explain why he would go to such extremes for what happened to Saiba, why did he torture his own daughter for this goal? His own daughter was put through the same levels (if not more) of pressure that broke Saiba. From the way it's looking he may have played with another humans feelings, seducing her and manipulating her to get to a position of power to carry out his plans. His actions are criminal forget what he is doing to the school, but what he did to his own family for what so far sounds petty does not make any sense what so ever.

 

I understand what his thinking is towards school...maybe? If everyone is a genius then no one is a genius, so there is no additional pressure on any individual, (though except his own daughter) but the manner he went about it doesn't even remotely make sense. I am disappointed that the flashback ended so early. I wanted to find out who Soma's mom was (clearly that revelation is meant for another arc) and what he discovered while he was on his journey.

To bad indeed!!! I wanted to see that also but on the other hand I'm glad they're over and we can move forward with the story bc the author really has a way of dragging flashbacks until they bore me!!!  

 

I wonder what the pairs will be for the training!?

Souma went all Luffy falling asleep during storytime. I'll be honest I still fail to understand Azami's motivation, as it isn't like Jouchirou left on bad terms, unless it really is as simple as not having a system with elites who have unprecedented pressure put on them.

 

I wasn't really expecting to see Souma's mother, as that would go against SWJ's policy of telling a backstory in multiple parts, however I was surprised that Erina's mother wasn't shown, I would have thought she'd be a student at the same time, maybe slightly younger maybe slightly older, even if we didn't get the backstory of how Azami duped her, I thought we'd see an introduction.
