I kinda liked her at first, I really didn't mind her. But after she found out that she was royalty she's kinda been thumbing her nose at everyone subtly, and it's rubbing me the wrong way lol
I hope the king is, because I didn't mind her at the beginning. Don't like her so much now though lol
The King is more powerful then we are being led on. A few things are obvious at this point that should be illuminated upon.
1. At first it was hinted at that the elite of Europe ran away from the titans (possibly across the ocean to America) hence the background images we get in every volume. Click to see it.
1 A. From this chapter we know that isn't true. Instead of the survivors being made up of the elites of Europe, what they are is mostly made up of a hand picked people who can be controlled by the power that resides in the king's family line. The only "divergent" to use the phrase brought up by trang was hinting at, are the families who were in support of the king (The king's right hand men), and some "Asians" who we assume discovered the "walled city" but came from the pacific. This is important later of course.
2. It was stated multiple times that humanity built the walls. Of course at the time most simply believed that the elite used their power and influence to build the walled city, as the rest of humanity died from extinction buying them time to finish their product across the ocean. A cult even sprang up around them, having them be declared as "God's gifts" to mankind in their time of need. That isn't that surprising honestly in a post apocalyptic setting new age religious groups are often found. Click to see it.
2 A. Although we've known for awhile that the walls weren't "built" by humanity as previously hinted at, but are instead constructed by colossus titans who are using a hardening technique. What is hinted at in the chapter though is that "humanity" built the walls... in the sense that the royal family built them in order to contain the people that they could control behind them. In other words the original King/royal family took a group of people that he knew he could control, built up a huge barrier, placed said people in there pen and started to create his "perfect society".
3. The walls are there to protect the people from the evils of the titans.
3 A. There is no doubt that the Titans are a threat. As we have learned they essentially are a terrible biological weapon that turn individual people into mindless monstrous slaves, who are essentially programmed to eat their fellow man in order to regain their humanity. Although it's been shown that the titans may have a subconscious understanding of their former self (the servant who bowed to Ilse, believing she was his Princess, Yomiru. And of course more tragically Conny's mother who still welcomes her baby boy home even after she's been transformed into a Titan) they ultimately don't have any control of the matter. With the servant and of course Ymir what we learn is that all of humanity wasn't destroyed 100 years ago. In fact Ymir had been a titan for 70 years also hints that there was structured civilization outside the city walls even after mankind's supposed "extinction". This is highlighted even more so with the other Titan Shifters who all come from the outside world beyond the wall. Meaning that even if the Titans themselves are the main threat to humanity, that humanity itself hasn't been completely wiped out outside the safety of the walls.
So are the walls truly there to just keep the titian's out? Or is this a secondary function? Perhaps the main function of the walls is to keep the "hand picked" people in, where the royal family can control them easier.
Again from the opening narration: " Home was a pen. Humanity, cattle."
4. The elites are all with the King. Their loyalty is completely invested in the royal bloodline, and their faith in them is because the Royal Family is humanities best chance to destroy the Titans.
4 A. We now know this is bullsh**. The elites are there because their families have always supported the ideals of the Royal Family, and the King's plans for a "peaceful" society. In fact the elite families are the few who are not controlled by King. Not only that the King can not control them, meaning they are a huge threat to them when they won't play ball. Two families have chosen not to play ball. The Ackerman Family, and one of the Asian's. This puts many things into focus.
4 A1: We now know the reason that elites were paying top dollars for pure blooded "Asians". Although it was hinted at that they were sold into slavery because of their exotic nature (which maybe their sex appeal was a secondary plus), but now we are getting hints that Mikasa's mother was killed because she is from this "rebel" family. Therefor she is a threat to the monarchy. Which also explains why Mikasa has so much more talent then the other people. Mikasa can use her fullest efforts in order to fight, she has no built in mental controls connected to her. It also explains how Mikasa's mother and father likely meet and feel in love. They both were outcast of elite families who rejected the utopian dreams of the mad Kings. Mikasa believed it was because of her race that her Mother was discriminated against... now it seems more likely that it was because her family became disillusioned with what the Royal Family was doing that she and her family was persecuted by the state.
4 A 2. Obviously this lack of any mental controls also hints to why Kenny is such a tough SOB, and may also hint to why Levi is a tough SOB. He maybe related to Kenny. Right now I'm guess Kenny is really Levi's uncle, and Levi is the baby that Kenny was talking about in this chapter. In other words Levi is the child born from Kenny's sister's (her name is Kuciel I guess) prostitute lifestyle. This fact is also why Kenny raised Levi, despite being a harden murder by then. Kenny felt compelled to take care of his sister's child.
4 A 3. It also explains why Levi and Mikasa are so damn powerful compared to other humans. Without any subconscious controls holding them back, they can work towards their full potential. They may even unknowingly be related at this point. As well as: This
I wonder what Kenny is talking about when he speaks of a "branch family" in the shiganshina district. Curiouser and curiouser, but the pieces are begin to fall into place.
