Yeah it makes no sense. It's like they take an NS argument (Naruto realised he liked Sakura because she wanted acknowledgment too - actually that's not an argument, it's fact) and try to twist it in their favour. Obviously he never just liked her for that.
Yeah, they skip over the fact that we were clearly shown that Naruto thinks Sakura is cute (not dark and weird), that he wanted to see her naked at the hot springs, and that he is often blown away by her abilities -- like curing Kankuro's poison, for example.
And then they say, "Since Naruto liked Sakura for her desire for acknowledgement he'll like Hinata, because she wanted acknowledgement too." As if the only reason Naruto ever liked Sakura was cause of that. and I don't think it was ever said (at least not directly) that Hinata wanted acknowledgement? There was that whole thing with her father, but.. idk.
We've all said this a zillion times (each, probably), but Hinata is a secondary character at best. More than that, she is a reflection character. She is meant to reflect an aspect of Naruto's character -- that he believes in supporting everyone including the underdog, and that success and strength can come from unexpected people.
Hinata's personal story, what little of it there may be, takes place completely within the shadow of Naruto's motivation and integrity as a character -- not him personally. However, people who prefer to view the story from Hinata's perspective will probably never see or understand that truth.
