When Sakura punched Sai was it really because he insulted Sasuke or was it because she didn't want Naruto to lose it on him?

When Sakura punched Sai was it really because he insulted Sasuke or was it because she didn't want Naruto to lose it on him?

I would like  to say both, but I think was for Sasuke.

Because he insulted Sasuke obviously. There is no debate on that imo. She even said "don't feel any rancor at Naruto, though to me, you can feel as rancorous as you want". The only thing that was directed at protecting Naruto was that sentence, the punch was for Sasuke.

I thought that at first too but she wasn't thinking about Sasuke but rather Naruto. When she says she was getting ready to punch him again Sai implies that she was doing it because of Naruto.

No, he was implying that she was nice to Naruto because she was retaining herself from punching him a second time because of Naruto, not because she wanted to punch him because of Naruto, it's the contrary.

You see? She wanted to punch him because he insulted Sasuke, but she didn't do it because of Naruto's feelings. That's why Sai says she's nice to Naruto.

The second time around was it because he badmouth Naruto or Sasuke? She said she would do it whenever he badmouthed Sasuke again but he badmouthed Naruto.

He badmouthed Sasuke the second time too in front of Naruto in the forest. He also badmouthed Naruto by saying he was weak, but just after that he added, "why are you calling such a traitor of the village your nakama?" or something along the line. That's why Sakura said after Naruto left saying "To bring him back I'm willing to be a team with you", "I said that I would punch you if you insluted Sasuke one more time, but since Naruto is willing to team up with you to bring him back, I can't hurt you if it can help to bring Sasuke back". She understood Naruto's words and accepted them as a truth: she can't hurt Sai in order to bring Sasuke to the village. It's all about Sasuke sadly.

Why does Naruto like Sakura? 

 

Naruto starts out as the boy whose very existence caused hate/fear in the people of Konoha. He becomes a prankster hoping people would notice him and treat him like any other kid. But he is avoided and treated like a pest. Naruto doesn't understand the reason for the hate and it makes his childhood miserable. He thus dreams of being Hokage one day so that he will finally get the acknowledgement of the entire village. 

Sakura was a girl from a normal family having her own insecurities. She gets bullied and taunted and be-littled by the other girls. So she wants to beat every other girl and win Sasuke's heart because that would finally get her acknowledgement from other girls. 

Naruto sees Sakura as a person similar to him, striving for acknowledgement of others and he starts to like her.

 

The bench scene is where Naruto realizes this. He asks Sakura what she thought of him. She just expresses disappointment that Naruto fails to  understand her and gets in the way and annoys her. She then says she was desperate for Sasuke to accept her and thus acknowledge her. Naruto, at that moment, sees Sakura as someone very similar to him and understands why he likes her so much. 

The fact that she is cute probably helped as well 

 

Other than Iruka,

Sakura was the first person to worry about his safety. 

The bell-test where she gives away her position to warn Naruto to run away from Kakashi.

 

Sakura was the first person to show concern for his injuries.

Wave arc where she wants to abandon the mission to get Naruto's cut on the wrist healed.

 

Sakura was the first person to say encouraging words to Naruto and show belief in his abilities. 

Chuunin exam fight against Kiba.

 

Sakura was the first person to acknowledge him and the strength of his bonds with others. 

During the PoAL where she says Naruto was the only one who could rescue Sasuke.

 

Sakura was the first person to understand the difficulties of Naruto's life as a Jinchuuriki.

 

I think all of these made Naruto to gradually admire Sakura more and more. Not to mention, Sakura has, through his whole journey, stood by his side and helped him whenever she could. Whenever he needed support the most, Sakura has been there for him. So its only natural that Naruto has developed a strong liking to Sakura.

That she was willing to hit Sai for badmouthing Sasuke who wasnt even there as oppose to repeatedly insulting Naruto while hes right there

You people do realize that the reason she hit Sai  was to protect Naruto and his feelings bc Naruto is not that kind of a guy  right ? That was the first thing on her mind how Naruto would react feel .  Saying it was just bc of Sasuke and the sole reason is just wrong when what she protected the most in there was Naruto's feelings for Sasuke  she later even goes to explain afterwards Naruto's feelings . If it was just about Sasuke and not Naruto's feelings then the comment of Sakura being very gentle with Naruto wouldn't have come .

well i reread this confession of Sakura and still have wierd feelings that her words did match her gesture. i mean her mimic show she s really in love but her words were so wrong that its feel like half assed confession

I think Sakura did punch because of Naruto. She know that Naruto would never show his anger. She did puunched Sai because mostly because of Naruto.

It was for insulting Sasuke. She says so doesn't she? That she won't stand Sai badmouthing Sasuke. But this was when she believed that Sasuke had somehow been tricked into joining Orochimaru's side. She hasn't defended Sasuke since she found out he joined the Akatsuki. Only Naruto did.

I think the confusing part is why bother stopping Naruto if he feels the same thing and want to hurt Sai but she takes the bullet of being the rough one of the team. It does feel mix of both but little more to Naruto because when Naruto got worse, Sakura couldn't do it again like before, hence her words that Naruto can't take it anymore and she can't stop him. Luckily, Naruto stopped and actually be a better man, despite that he didn't like him still.

If there's one thing I noticed, whenever she expose something that is related to Naruto, the other characters would realize where she more concern on rather than else. I think the fact she didn't punch Sai was pretty telling because Sakura could have still punch Sai because that should be her own feeling, but she's like "If Naruto is ok, I don't need to take the frustration for him." The arc was centered more on Naruto and why he wants to save Sasuke, never hers or even Team 7. That's why you 2 characters noticing Sakura's feelings. I guess this is her tsundere perk here.

Well, Naruto is Jiraiya's student after all. He's inherited Jiraiya's will of fire in the love department as well
