This is the roughest start for an Nintendo handheld ever. I don't see the 3DS being as successful as its predecessor, but it should get a spike in sales.
It's unfortunate, but it's more or less true. I bought one a few months ago, and the game line-up is pretty disappointing. So far, the only games I've cared enough to buy were Street Fighter IV and Zelda OOT, both of which are remakes. I love the system itself, but then again, I jumped straight from the original model to the 3DS, so of course it'll seem amazing in comparison.
That being said, I'm sure it'll get a sales increase once a decent set of games start appearing. I'm already foaming at the mouth for the ToA remake (I foam at the mouth for anything Tales related

), and I'm sure future first/second party-developed games will help in that regard (whenever they start coming out with non-remakes). Sure, it could go the same way as the Game Boy Micro, but the comparison sort of falls flat. As I recall, the GBM came out a year or two before the DS, and was basically a tiny GBA. The 3DS is a next-gen handheld, and with its own games non-compatible with previous DS models. A comparison between the GBM and DS Lite/DSi/DSi XL would be more apt.
On top of that, from the figures I've seen, Nintendo's more or less dominated the handheld market for a while now (I think the PSP outsold it for a little while when it came out, but fell behind less than a year after), so I'm guessing the trend will continue with the 3DS/Vita. But that's all contingent on the 3DS coming out with a stronger line-up, since right now it's pretty pitiful.
I found out on facebook by a friend of mine about it. It's almost impossible to believe that a new generation handheld console has dropped its original price of 250$ to 170$ guess Nintendo wants those sales badly before the Vita is release knowing that they will have their work cut out when it does.
However Nintendo has always focus on fans of all ages especially kids of 7 to 12 years old that's probably why they decreased the price of the 3DS, it's not desperation but probably a faster way to have kids buying the product. Just imagine if a father or a mother who has three kids and they all want a 3DS buying three 3DS on the original price it's more than 500$ there's no way the parent is going to waste that much money on a handheld console and thus that's what Nintendo thought by decreasing the price. It's genius if you ask me less money to spend on the product but more savings and more sales for Nintendo remember more $$$ keeps any gaming company happy and satisfy.

7-12? Wow, that's not a exaggeration at all. Younger consumers make up a big chunk on Nintendo's current sales, but I wouldn't say that's Nintendo's focus as much it is just casual gamers in general. And, contrary to what a lot of people seem to think in the gaming community, casual gamer does not equal younger gamer. The first is often a subset of the second, but that doesn't mean one equates to the other.
The DS itself was really aimed towards that market (casual gamers), but I was actually impressed with some of games targeted towards Nintendo die-hards. Zelda: Spirit Tracks remains to this day the only Zelda game I've actually had to stop and take notes to figure out some of the puzzles (the last few rooms in the Tower of Spirits were pretty insane). If games like that are being targeted towards little kids, then dang, I must be getting dumb in my old age of 23.
