I used to not think something like Minato asking Sakura if she was Naruto's girlfriend would happen the way it did, if even at all. I didn't even think a NaruSaku/MinaKushi confirmation would happen by Minato comparing Sakura to Kushina. I still remember clearly saying that that wasn't going to happen in 631 the day before it was released. And then I ended up hilariously and satisfying wrong.

 

I've seen some NH fans on tumblr getting saying it didn't make sense that Minato asked a question like that to Sakura and arguing "He doesn't even know his son! He doesn't know their relationship! He's a bad source for NS!". Basically just typical raging, but I can agree that was pretty out of left field how that scene happened.

 

I don't think Minato's an unreliable source tho. Wasn't his spirit inside Naruto right up until the Pain Arc? He said he already knew what happened to Jiraiya and everything that was happening. Maybe he asked if Sakura was Naruto's girlfriend because he saw something between them while he was inside Naruto. Or am I completely misinterpreted the Pain Arc exchange?

^ yeah, that's what I thought too people but later on when Naruto used Sage Mode Minato was surprised. Although that could just be an accidental incosistency on Kishi's part.

I wonder if the SS fans were going crazy after that close up shot of Sakura's lips after Sasuke arrived?? I wouldn't put it past them lol

That or maybe he doesn't know at all. He was inside in that reaper body. As for knowing, he most likely put the puzzle on his own with one scene. Many times, they get it right. That and without knowing much, they still get the right one.

Do you have what he said on japanese? A NH shipper told me that VIZ translation was only "Sort of"

Look at this: "Actually, Viz Media's translation of what Naruto said about the girlfriend thing was "Hmm? Uh... Sort of." So it was more like Naruto wasn't quite sure how to answer his zombie father in the middle of a war. It would've been a bit odd for him to actually answer that fully. Saying something like "No, Dad. I want to date her, but she loves someone else" or "No, Dad. She doesn't feel the same way about me" or "I'm actually interested in someone else" (meaning Hinata) or "I have no idea, Dad. A whole lot has happened and I haven't had time to work out my feelings yet" ...none of those things would really work for that short moment, so he went with "Sort of." "

Would Minato really be the type of person to conclude Sakura was Naruto's girlfriend like that? Sakura wasn't doing anything romantic with Naruto other than healing and he would know that's a standard procedure.  It would be very weird for Minato to just ask if she was his girlfriend without knowing something beforehand.

 

When you think about it, Minato concluding without knowing anything would actually support NS more. It leads heavily to the fact Kishi forced this scene in despite any inconsistencies or logic elements because he really wanted that to happen. I'd be even more unnecessary than if he had Minato asking with some knowledge.

Hard to say really, because there are fathers that will randomly ask the girl if she is the girlfriend of his son, knowledge or not, yet it's the one that will end with it. The work of media.

In this situation, the anime team interprated the sentence as "I leave my son in your hands." It depends of the context, but Sakura's smile say it all. It's not a smile of "Yes, sorry I'll be more gentle" is it?

I think small moments-the ramen feeding scene, Sakura talking about Naruto's feelings to the alliance, the hug, Sakura cheering him up, Sakura standing up for him, worrying for him, healing for him.

I guess these small moments added up to make him think that Sakura is more or less like his girlfriend than just a friend.

(Now that I wrote all the above moments, I find it an impossible task for Naruto to get over Sakura. Who could give up on a girl who does all the above for you )

 

So you'd say that Naruto called Sakura his girlfriend because she basically supports him in every way a girlfriend would towards her boyfriend. The only detail missing is having Sakura fall completely for him, which is why Naruto said "something like that".

 

Is that about right?

 

What still intrigues me is that Sakura didn't even deny being Naruto's girlfriend, she just made an excuse to make Naruto stop talking. So does she agree that she's something like that? Is she just angry because she doesn't want Naruto to casually bring up such a delicate topic?

 

Do any other japanese fans wonder about this too? Or are they just happy that such a funny scene took place?

No it isnt but its kind of hard to pin down what her smile means exactly it can be interpreted in different ways. Though the most likely scenario is that she is happy Minato gave NS his blessing.

It doesn't matter what happens for nh/ss.sakura could think of naruto in flashbacks and say 'what's with my heart? Naruto...I-' Or aanything like that and ss/nh would still deny it. They'll never stop finding excuses or other theories that contradict ns. If nh got the minato approval and the cpr gooood they'd went insane.

I have to give credit to where credit is due. Excellent work by SP. They even gave us more than expected. Sakura's expression was perfect, it was like the little girl inside her smiling. It was something special    And did anyone else notice the way Naruto's eyes lit up when he said 'Yeah, she is more or less my girlfriend'??? So adorable  ​ 

 

Probably he was too busy with Hokage duties and neglected kitchen duties 

 LOL. This was probably what made Kushina angry    But he seemed to be handling kitchen-duties pretty efficiently in RtN , I won't ever forget the image of the fourth Hokage in the pink apron

The NH fandom is over thinking things. They're trying to block the sun with one finger. Trust me they wouldn't be this desperate if Minato approached Hinata instead. They're still fans hoping Minato will approach Hinata and ask her about Naruto. But why Minato will talk to a side character who isn't important to the story?
