Never forget, this is from the chapter titled "The Real End." This speaks volumes about Hinata's role in the story. No matter what comes after, I firmly believe this is how Kishimoto wanted it to end.
There's a good case to make for it, that's for damn sure. Heh, I was toying with the idea of a story/theory where this moment is when Naruto and Sasuke are trapped within the IT, hence their inability to fend it off.
Perhaps he will enlighten us some day further on down the line.
