Oda and Detective Conan's mangaka are similar in that respect as they both have stated they don't to want wrap up their respective manga quickly, so they drag them out.  Oda mentioned his manga was only halfway complete at the end of the last arc before New World.  The manga was running close to a decade before then.  It doesn't change the fact that they are both widely popular manga.  I personally do not read One Piece, but I have been watching the Case Closed anime, and read some of the manga.  I'm far behind now though.

We haven't been getting much spoilers recently 4life, they haven't come out for at least 5-6 chapters now.  Usually, the chapter gets released before any spoilers get out.

Believe it or not, Oda has said that there was a lot he wanted to put in the series but couldn't because it would slow the story down, although I think that a good portion of it eventually got used as filler in the Anime but I'm not sure.

 

But yeah One Piece is a long runner, in fact Oda said that it hit the half way point at chapter 597 I think.

That makes sense, so basically a week break makes a lot more sense than Kishi just abandoning this far into the war to take a break.
