We Don't Get Drums by Runespoor

Really original AU oneshot set in WWI era, homefront and trenches. NaruSaku, with nod to NejiHina. I love stories like this that break out of the mold.

Summary: There are two things to wait for: the next letter, and the war to end. WWI AU. [gen focus, mentioned NejiHina, implied T7 tension.]

Edit: And another great one-shot,

No Legends Left by Runespoor

Summary: Two decades in the future, "Madara" has implemented peace. There are no longer Hidden Villages. But there are still ninjas; they just need to be hidden. There's no place left for the legends.

A couple of fics I found that are good:

Fiends by FadingRain03

Premise: AU of Naruto and cast in a world where monsters and supernatural beings coexist. Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke are agents of the FCA, Fiend Control Agency, an organization that fight monsters. However, Naruto found out he considered himself a "monster" as well... Ongoing, NaruSaku in recent chapters.

Path to Kage by Hiyuusha

Premise: A certain event caused Naruto abandoning the world and teachings of the shinobi. Living with his Godfather, Jiraiya, in a different country as a regular civilian, Naruto might reconsidered when a certain someone of his past rely a grim message of his father, the Hokage, is now in a coma... Ongoing, NaruSaku.

(Read this fic, trust me! It felt like I'm reading a Naruto manga reboot! I'm awaiting for the next chapter!)

Certainly not! Though cliffhanger endings do have a tendency to make me  :fist: Because then you've got to go awhile just wondering what's going to happen.

I meant the reuniting ^^. Thx for the "not really a spoiler" this makes me look forward to the next chapter instead of dreading the wait ^^.

Good!  I'm glad you'll be looking forward to what happens next. That's always nice to hear.

Just out of curiosity, if you could vote on it would you rather authors not leave chapters at cliffhangers?  Do you actually like the wondering, but just know you'll be frustrated by it until the story moves ahead?  Or is the wondering truly unpleasant?

Personally, I like cliffhangers.  I love trying to figure out what might happen next (or overall) based on what I know so far.  Then again, I also like minor spoilers -- the kind designed to give me hints to ponder without telling me everything.  It builds suspense and anticipation.

There are so many ways to go about storytelling.  It's so interesting.

And I'm still -- STILL -- trying to get the hang of this fandom.  I got so spoiled by the Harry Potter community; it was a HUGE fandom and for the most part so much more engaged with each other as contributors and individuals, as well as being significantly more interactive and expressive with regard to supporting fan fiction and art.

I continue to ponder if the difference lies primarily in the type of reader attracted by the media (novels as opposed to manga), the average age of the fan, the story content, or some combination.  Like I said, interesting.

Overall, I actually do like cliffhangers, when the story is well-written and engaging then they build anticipation and interest in what's to come. The only time cliffhanger endings are truly unpleasant is when a story ends with one and appears to be on indefinite hiatus or even completely abandoned from there, now that is excruciating. :pinch: And with the fic I'm currently writing, I would probably be a hypocrite if I were to say cliffhangers should be avoided, because I expect I will be making use of them myself.

Overall I like cliffhangers as long as I know that eventually things will turn out all right again.

(so no character deaths or smthng like that)

If an author posts chapters one at a time and controls the pace, cliffhangers are inevitable or I daresay the story doesn't have much action or suspense built into it.  Readers complain about cliffhangers because they are forced to anticipate something without control -- which is at odds with our modern, instant gratification lifestyles.

Overall I like cliffhangers as long as I know that eventually things will turn out all right again.

I'm not a fan of character death, although one has occurred in already in Wilderness.  But I mean death of either of the main characters.  If people are reading primarily for the pairing, why kill one of them? That's not my style.  I'd rather bore people with a detailed relationship or character study instead.   :twitch:
