Monkey is crude and sounds a bit like Sean Connery but the act is wonderful

I don't think Sakura really knew how deep Naruto cared for her in Part 1, it wasn't until Sai told her in Part 2 that Naruto loves her that's when she realized the things that Naruto has done for her because he was in love with her. But if you asking specifically when she figured out Naruto's crush, I think she always knew. He never hid it, he often flirts with her and ask her out on dates. I just don't think she realized how much Naruto loved her until Part 2.

some people have been arguing this very point for years, either NS is a given or Kishi has wasted almost 600 chapters lol

It just doesn't add up! Why would you spend more than a decade of your life constantly drawing characters over and over again, and put so much development into the love story of the serise to not have your lead female fall for the lead male? It just doesn't make any sense at all to me. What's the point of Sakura feeling so strong for Naruto and caring more about him than Sasuke if she's just going to fall in love with him again?

Uh.... Friendship! It's one of the most important themes in Naruto.

While you're at it, what about Yamato's unfinished sentence? What about Sai's judgment on emotions? What about the flashback of Naruto still loving Sakura? What about all the subtle hints of them (the hug, the feeding)? What about Naruto, he has stuff to accomplish and yes, she's one of them (not to be taken as a trophy mind you). What about the obvious parallel of Jiraya and Naruto's parents? Why bring up the obvious connection that Kishi placed?
The list can go on. To put it in a simple sentence: NaruSaku is the logical pairing of them all and well worth of investment.

You know what that reminds me of. Remember Avatar when the Ang gang went to go watch a play on Ember Island? Imagine instead of Ang and Katara, it was Naruto and Sakura.
That is exactly what comes to my mind whenever people suggest Naruto and Sakura are going to end up friends.

You mean brother and sister.
Yes, I remember that episode. It was like a troll from the makers that just reflects with the audience minds. It was a fun episode. If anything, Road to Ninja is somewhat like that. Not necessary a recap but only to test people minds with its opposite and ifs (ex: outspoken Hinata). Only we get the winning team.

That might be the point of making Hinata and Sasuke like that in Road to Ninja. How they are in the genjutsu world represents how some fans wanted them to become. Many fans believe that if Hinata was more open she'd get Naruto and if Sasuke was more charming Sakura would melt in his arms.
It could be that Kishimoto is out to confirm that even with those changes Hinata and Sasuke wouldn't be able to convince Naruto and Sakura to be with them.

What is the plot to this movie? Is it an alternate universe or what?
